What To Buy During Fourth of July Sales — and What To Skip, According to Shopping Experts

The Fourth of July is just days away, and retailers across sectors are hyping up big deals across a number of categories. It’s important to be a little skeptical here and know what’s worthy of your hard-earned money and what items are better to buy at another time of year.

RetailMeNot‘s savings experts rounded up a list of what they deem to be the buys — and what Fourth of July sales you should sit out.

What To Buy During Fourth of July Sales 

• Grills and appliances. Bargain hunters, take note. Retailers are serving up dynamite deals on grills and accessories. Pay extra attention to sales on these items from Home Depot and Lowe’s, which have already rolled out impressive discounts in these categories.  
• Mattresses. It’s no surprise that the Fourth of July weekend (a long one, for many Americans) is ushering in discounts on mattresses. Long weekends often see retailers featuring sales in this department. RetailMeNot calls out Mattress Firm as a star player here; it’s sporting up to $700 off top-rated mattress brands, plus a free adjustable base.
• Apparel (including summer essentials). If you’re still revamping your wardrobe for the warmer (or downright brutally hot) months, you’re in luck. The Fourth of July weekend will see hearty discounts on summer apparel, including swimsuits, cover-ups and beach/pool accessories. Specific deals are still pending here, but you can probably count on Old Navy for standout sales here. In past years, the mega-retailer has offered up to 60% off everything. You’re also likely to see some great sales on back-to-school wear for the kiddos. 
• Furniture. Shopping experts at RetailMeNot anticipate substantial discounts on couches, chairs and tables as retailers clear their aisles for new inventory coming toward the end of summer. If history repeats, you could find deals upward of 50% off on furniture. RetailMeNot suggests scoping out Wayfair and Overstock for impressive sales. 
• Pool accessories and lawn games. If you’re in need of pool accessories or yard games, you’re in luck. RetailMeNot recommends shopping Walmart’s Summer Rollback and checking out Academy Sports + Outdoors along with Dick’s Sporting Goods for these items. 
• Party decor. Planning to host any summer shindigs? Look for striking discounts on festive decor and party supplies, such as drinkware, plates, cups, decorations and Bluetooth speakers. Target is shaping up to be a strong contender for deals in this department.   
• Food and snacks. Bargain hunters should also shop Target’s weekly ad and Walmart’s grocery section for BOGO deals on snacks and meats.

What To Buy Later 

• Electronics. You’re likely going to be charged with ads for sales on electronics around the Fourth of July. It’s best to wait for Amazon’s Prime Day sale, which will be held July 16-17.
• TVs. You’ll also probably see some hype around TVs during the holiday weekend. Either wait for Amazon Prime Day or, better yet, wait (if you can) for Black Friday when TVs see their biggest discounts of the year.
