Official: Chelsea sign Marc Guiu from Barcelona
Chelsea have added yet another highly promising teenager to the fold, with 18-year-old Marc Guiu announced today on a five-year deal through 2029, with a club option for an additional year.
The youngster’s contract at Barcelona had a surprisingly small buyout clause of just €6m, which Chelsea have triggered, beating out competition from Bayern Munich, Sevilla, and Barcelona themselves, who had come in with a contract extension.
Guiu, an already tall and two-footed “classic No.9”, was born in the outskirts of Barcelona in 2006 — getting closer and closer to our first player born after this very blog got started in 2010! — and joined their famed La Masia academy at age 7. There he progressed steadily up the ranks before making his senior debut this past season and collecting seven appearances. He scored twice, once each in La Liga and the Champions League. Hopefully he’ll get many more for us in that latter competition in the future!
“It’s an immense joy to sign for Chelsea and I struggled to sleep ahead of the journey here because I was so excited. Ever since I was small, it was my dream to play in the Premier League.
“Now I have the opportunity to come here to Chelsea and I will work my hardest to be successful for the club.”
