NFL futures: Two teams we're fading in the playoff market
New York Jets QB Aaron Rodgers.
We have been pumping up some teams we like in the NFL for this coming season for the better part of a week, and now it seems only right we turn to the negative side of the market. For the next few days, we're highlighting a few teams we want no part of this year, and how you might be able to bet off that belief.
Two 'to miss playoff bets' that offer some value
New York Jets to miss playoffs (+135 DraftKings)
There are far more questions than answers when it comes to the New York Jets and how they'll look this year with a 40-year old Aaron Rodgers coming off a serious Achilles injury.
Rodgers has been one of the league's best quarterbacks for the last 15 years, but there is no guarantee he regains that effectiveness this year, and some of the off-the-field stories that follow the QB could end up being just too big of a distraction this season.
With an offensive line that remains a relative question mark, and a few holes on defense, we're not quite seeing why New York is favored to make the dance come January.
The AFC is absolutely loaded. You've got the Chiefs, Bengals, Ravens, Bills, and Texans as near-locks for the playoffs (assuming health), and there are other teams here like the Browns, Dolphins, Steelers, and Colts that could be pushing for the last two spots.
In such a competitive conference, we'll gladly jump on the plus-money offered to us here to fade the Jets.
Atlanta Falcons to miss playoffs (+200 DraftKings)
We've written about this look already, but for the sake of this exercise through this market, we have to once again highlight that a +200 price to bet against Atlanta is too good to pass up.
This price is stronger than on some far superior teams in the NFC, like Detroit (+195), Philadelphia (+180), Dallas (+170) and Green Bay (+125).
In fact, there are only four teams in the entire NFL that have a longer odds price to miss the playoffs than the Falcons.
We get it, in a vacuum: the NFC South is horrible. But there is no good reason the Falcons should be such resounding favorites in this division, as they too have an older QB coming off a serious injury. Atlanta is not a good team. Why are the markets skewed so heavily towards them?
This organization has shown itself to be mismanaged time and time again, and we'll gladly prefer the Bucs out of the NFC South, who won a playoff game last season, over an Atlanta team who has not shown anything for 5+ years.
