An 100-Year-Old Former Pickle Shop Has Shuttered

A nearly 100-year-old former pickle shop that’s had many lives has shuttered. Pickle Works opened in 1928 by Frank and Patricia Pfisterer: Selling first, pickles, then paper goods, condiments, tomato sauce, and other items by the case, it also sold frozen bulk items like french fries — all for professional kitchens. Then, new owners in 2021 introduced fresh fruits and vegetables. “We put great effort and investment into remodeling as well as expanding on the items offered to better serve our local food service professionals,” one of the newer partners, Peter Botros, told Staten Island Live. “After a two-and half-year run, we have decided to close the business due to the economic hardship that is wide-felt across our customer base, and the food service industry as a whole.” The 14,000-square-foot space is for sale for $4,175,000 at 1116 Targee Street, near Richmond Road, on Staten Island.

Smorgasburg opens a new outpost

On Wednesdays and Thursdays through August, the food festival Smorgasburg will run an abbreviated market — about 20 vendors — at the outdoor plaza outside of the Shed, the Hudson Yards performance venue. It begins this week, per a spokesperson.

A summer pop-up from Bonnie’s

Cantonese American hit Bonnie’s will bring a taste of its restaurant to a recurring pop-up on Sundays through July at the Williamsburg location of brewery Talea. Look out for lobster rolls with fermented bean curd, clam rolls, pickled mustard green oysters, and congee hush puppies, 12 to 6 p.m. at 87 Richardson Street, at Leonard Street.

Daily Provisions eyes another expansion

The Danny Meyer-backed bakery and cafe is set to open another location by the end of 2024, at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, nestled beside Jupiter, the rink-level pasta spot from the King team, according to a spokesperson.
