Samsung's Galaxy AI now supports 16 languages including Hindi, Thai, Vietnamese and more
South Korean tech giant Samsung, on Monday, announced that Galaxy AI has added support for new languages and dialects, including British, Indian, and Australian English, as well as Thai, Vietnamese, and Indonesian.
This, the company said, is the result of extensive collaboration among Samsung’s global Research & Development teams, spearheaded by the Samsung R&D Institute India – Bangalore (SRI-B).
SRI-B also spearheaded the development of the Hindi language model for Galaxy AI, which included addressing over 20 regional dialects, tonal inflexions, and the frequent use of English words in Hindi conversations.
Recently, engineers from various Samsung Research centres visited Bangalore to work alongside the SRI-B team in integrating Vietnamese, Thai, and Indonesian into Galaxy AI.
“Every language has its challenges,” said Giridhar Jakki, Head of Language AI at SRI-B. “But when you consider the end goal of bringing people the ability to communicate in other languages, it’s worth every ounce of effort. We couldn’t wait to bring Hindi to Galaxy AI.”
Jakki explained the intricacies of creating the Hindi language model, which required developing a unique set of phonemes to accommodate Hindi's complex phonetic structure, including retroflex sounds. Collaboration with native linguists ensured an accurate representation of the language’s diverse sounds.
The project benefited greatly from partnerships with academic institutions. The Vellore Institute of Technology provided nearly a million lines of segmented and curated audio data, essential for accurately modelling conversational Hindi. This collaboration guaranteed the use of high-quality data for the fourth most spoken language globally.
With the latest update, Galaxy AI now supports 16 languages, empowering users to enhance their language skills even offline through features like Live Translate, Interpreter, Note Assist, and Browsing Assist.
“I’m extremely proud of what we’ve achieved with the help of our partners,” said Jakki. “AI innovation through collaboration is a big part of what we do. We will continue to better understand, collect, and analyse language data so more people can have access to AI tools in the future.”
Galaxy AI is currently available in the Galaxy S24 series, the Galaxy S23 series, the Galaxy S23 FE, the Galaxy S22 series, the Galaxy S21 series, the Galaxy Z Fold5, the Galaxy Z Flip5, and the Tab S9 series along with some models of Galaxy Buds.
