'My Sweet Mobster' Review: Light, fluffy romance done right
If you are in the mood for some light and fluffy romance, 'My Sweet Mobster' is here to your rescue. Just as the name suggests, the new K-drama has an ex-convict (also a mobster), a content creator who encounters him accidentally and their brewing 'sweet' romance at the center of it all.
In 'My Sweet Mobster,' you have Seo Ji-hwan [Uhm Tae Goo] who runs a meat processing company where only ex-convicts are up for hire. This is a company run by ex-convicts, so the credibility is always in question. The now-righteous ex-con finds himself wildly attracted to an unpopular kids' content creator, Go Eun Ha [Han Sun-hwa], who he bumps into during one of his expeditions. Although the premise of a kind-hearted simple girl falling for the ex-bad guy is quite a cliche, 'My Sweet Mobster' uses it beautifully to set up a believable romance.
The backdrop of a tantalizing and dangerous world of organized crime and love makes you root for their story. You also have Kwon Yul playing Jang Hyeon-woo, who is a prosecutor who hates Seo Ji-hwan. It is interesting to see how their present is connected to their past meetings, and why this seemed like an inevitable encounter.
What's also amazing is the ensemble cast that includes Kim Hyun-jin as Joo Il-young, Lee Yoo-joon as Jung Man-ho, and Moon Dong-hyeok as Yang Hong-ki, among others. The show focuses on their interpersonal bond and loyalty, which adds a more promising layer. You root for the love story and also the men who seem to be trying to get their lives on track.
Uhm Tae-goo, who is usually known for playing intense supporting roles, is quite a revelation here. His charismatic yet confused lover side is a delight to watch. What also helps is Tae-goo swiftly shifting between showing a tough personality and embracing the rather cute side to him like a pro. Sun-hwa is the perfect 'ying' to Tae-goo's 'yang'. They fit together perfectly, complementing each other's crazy personalities.
The writing so far is a right balance of humour and slapstick along with emotional crutches used to set a right connection. The music so far is decent, but nothing stands out.
There are a lot of parallel sub-plots and secrets to be unravelled in future episodes that are enough to keep you invested in this rom-com.
