With Sam Reinhart officially re-signed and Jake Guentzel reportedly having a deal in place with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Steven Stamkos will be the best free agent on the market at noon. Because of this, he is generating a plethora of interest.
According to Bob McKenzie, six or more teams are currently in the mix for Stamkos' services. In addition, McKenzie specifically noted that the Nashville Predators, Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes, Detroit Red Wings, and New Jersey Devils are currently making pitches for No. 91.
The Predators and Red Wings have been heavily connected to Stamkos since last week, but the Ducks, Hurricanes, and Devils had not been discussed much before this. Yet, with each of those teams needing help in their top six, it is understandable that they are eyeing a two-time Stanley Cup winner in Stamkos.
Stamkos, 34, would be a significant addition to any of these five clubs. This past season with the Lightning, he showed that he is still a legitimate star, posting 40 goals and 81 points in 79 regular-season games.
As we get closer to noon, it will not be surprising if more clubs enter the sweepstakes, as Stamkos is the biggest fish on the market. We will need to wait and see what happens with the 2008 first-overall pick from here.
