Hundreds evacuated by helicopters from isolated Italian alpine town after weekend flood
The Alpine town of Cone in northeastern Italy has been cut off after a river flash flood caused its only Rd. in or out to collapse over the weekend. Rescue workers said they had evacuated about 500 people by helicopter, mainly tourists, by Monday morning. About 200 more remain to be evacuated. Supplies are also being brought into the town by helicopter. An emergency services are working to fix drinkable water pipelines damaged by the floods. According to local media, phone and Internet connections remain problematic. It's the latest emergency caused by extreme flooding in the region, with the nearby mountain town of Slovenia suffering damage to roads and buildings after storms pounded the region over the weekend.
