Short term effects of cataract include diminution of vision, diplopia and colored halos. It also effects the profession and personal life. Long term complications include maturation of cataract and complicate cataract surgery. Long term complications include lens induced glaucoma, subluxation of lens and absorption of lens.

In the short-term, cataracts may cause no symptoms. With time the patient may have some mild altered vision like difficulty with vision at night, seeing halos around lights, sensitivity to light, and blurred vision. If left untreated, the patient has a great chance of going blind.

Vision becomes very blurry and cloudy. In rare cases it can cause glaucoma and cataract. Increased difficulty with vision at night. Seeing halos around lights. Double vision in a single eye is also a long term effect of cataract.
