The Los Angeles Chargers have revamped their offense this offseason, bringing in new talent and a new head coach, Jim Harbaugh. With these changes, the team is aiming for a strong push toward the postseason.
A key part of this new look is the addition of two veteran tight ends, Hayden Hurst and Will Dissly. While not the biggest names in the league, Daniel Popper of The Athletic believes both players bring valuable skills that could significantly impact the Chargers' offensive strategy.
"Dissly and Hurst are the top two tight ends on the depth chart," Popper said. "Both players are slated to have major roles in the offense in 2024. Dissly will be the best run-blocking tight end the Chargers have rostered since 2020 when they had Hunter Henry and Virgil Green. Hurst brings more as a receiver and should be a factor in the passing game. Hurst is coming off a down year. He finished 2023 with 18 catches for 184 yards. But he has proven production as a receiver, most recently with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2022, when he caught 52 passes."
The combination of these two tight ends allows the Chargers to be versatile in their offensive sets and situations. Both players have ample experience in the league, providing quarterback Justin Herbert with reliable targets.
Herbert's preference for throwing to tight ends aligns well with Harbaugh's offensive style, which often emphasizes tight end involvement. This synergy could lead to productive seasons for both Hurst and Dissly, opening up opportunities for the entire team.
As the Chargers gear up for the season, the integration of these new pieces will be crucial in determining their success. The dual tight end setup could be a game-changer for Los Angeles, providing the stability and versatility needed to make a playoff run.
