Brighton & Hove Albion midfield enforcer Yves Bissouma has admitted that it is his “dream” to play in the UEFA Champions League, as speculation concerning his future continues to mount.
Bissouma, who joined Brighton from French outfit Lille in 2018, has gone from strength-to-strength on the south coast in the last year or so, leading to widespread interest in his signature ahead of and during the summer transfer window.
Arsenal and Liverpool were amongst those most heavily linked with the Mali international, whilst Manchester United fans were urging the club to make a move.
Bolstering the central-defensive midfield role remains a top priority for United after failing to draft one in during the summer. Declan Rice has been pinpointed as their main target to strengthen that area of the squad, but links with Bissouma continue to persist.
Now, if United’s interest in him was to become concrete and a deal for Rice is not viable, Bissouma’s dream of playing in Europe’s top club competition could help the Reds’ chances of signing him.
“I didn’t go this summer, maybe its because it’s not my time to go,” Bissouma told Brighton’s website, as quoted by the Mirror.
“When my time will come, it’s my time, but I’m happy in Brighton, I’m enjoying playing football.
“My dream is like every player, I want to play in the Champions League, I want to be champions. I want to compare myself on the top level, not just with other players.”
Despite Bissouma continuing to be linked with a move away from the AMEX Stadium, Seagulls manager Graham Potter remains adamant that his star midfielder is going nowhere anytime soon.
“It feels like they’ve been asked for the last few months, so we’re used to it,” he said.
“But it’s good, if you’re getting that talk then he’s doing something well, we’re doing something well.
“He’s enjoying his football. You can’t control what people say from the outside, it’s talk, but he’s happy with us and we will keep working with him.”
