My Hero Academia: Hawks’ Betrayal, Explained

In the world of My Hero Academia, there have always been heroes and villains. But who would have thought that a No.2 pro hero would act as a double agent, feeding information to the League of Villains but at the same also being on the hero’s side? Even though Hawk has been referenced previously, he is properly introduced to the audience in chapter 184 of the manga.

A strong and powerful hero at only age 22, Hawks came from a troubled past but looked up to Endeavor as his role model and hero. Even though Hawks may appear laid back and causal, he is always ready to save the innocent, but what made him go undercover and work with the League of Villains?

Did Hawks Want to Join the League of Villains?

Why did Hawks want to Join the League of Villains and What Happened?

In episode 94 of the anime, after Endeavor had defeated the powerful Nomu along with Hawks, Hawks is later seen meeting up with Dabi in a secluded spot, asking him to let him join the League of Villains, Dabi is skeptical and walks away, saying it’s too soon to introduce Hawks to his leader. This scene left fans shocked and confused about Hawk’s true intentions and if he really did want to side with the villains and why. But then the scene cuts to Hawks in a meeting with the Hero Public Safety Commission’s Madam President, where they personally request him to infiltrate the League of Villains. Shocked by the request, Hawks feels conflicted and mentions that he was under the impression that an investigative team was being formed, but it seemed that the Hero Public Safety Commission changed their mind after the chaos that took place during the Kamino incident, where All For One appeared and a full-scale villain attack took place.

To ensure a situation like this never occurs again, the Hero Public Safety Commission requested that Hawks infiltrate the League and finds out as much as he could about the Nomus and how they were created. The Hero Public Safety Commission also believed the main reason they lost the battle during the Kamino incident was because they had insufficient intel about the League, and wanted to avoid making the same mistake. They chose Hawks because his resolve was on saving people rather than his image or fame and that there was no other hero who could be best suited for a mission as risky as infiltrating the League.

Hawks’ Mission to Save the World

Hawks’ Solo Mission Was a Risk he Was Willing to Take

To prove his allegiance to the League of Villains, Hawks was asked to kill Best Jeanist and deliver his body to Dabi, it was only then would the League accept him into their organization. Hawks is then later seen visiting Best Jeanist and the scene ends right before it looks like Hawks is about to attack and kill him. Hawks does deliver the body of Best Jeanist to Dabi, getting him a pass into the League of Villains. This allowed Hawks to gather as much intel as possible on the League and feed that information to the Hero Public Safety Commission and Endeavor, warning them of the attack the Paranormal Liberation army had planned. During the war, however, there were still casualties, but at least the hero association were ready for the attack.

If corrupting myself is enough to put everyone at ease, then I will gladly take this job

It is later revealed that Best Jeanist is in fact alive and comes to the aid of the heroes during the Paranormal Liberation War. This is because Hawks came up with a clever plan to fool Dabi and the League into believing that Best Jeanist was actually dead by putting him into a deathlike state with the help of some doctors. He was later able to retrieve Best Jeanist’s body and hide him until the time was right. Hawks fought hard and took extensive measures to join the League and pretend he was on their side, just so that he could gather intel. Because of his heroism, he was able to find out information about the Paranormal Liberation Front before they launched their attack, giving the heroes time to prepare for the war.
