Your autumn style checklist: the 6 pieces you need for trans-seasonal dressing

These stylish pieces by Storeez, Vince and Sandro, tick all the autumnal boxes and are ideal for the changeable weather – 12 Storeez; Vince; Sandro

Who else had a shock to the system this morning on spotting the grey skies and wet ground? The autumn equinox took place last week, but the unseasonably sunny temperatures meant we were able to ignore the fact that it signals the first day of autumn. There’s no denying it this week, however: with the weather in the UK going from bright and warm to wet and windy within 24 hours (in typical autumnal fashion), it’s definitely time to think about our clothes.

As much as we haven’t wanted to pack them away, our chunky sandals and linen shirts will only take us so far, and the change in season naturally requires a shift in sartorial approach. We need to be cosy but not too warm, prepared for rain but also for sunny afternoons, all while looking appropriately autumnal, since it’s safe to say we’ve waved goodbye to summer. Here are the stylish pieces that tick all of those boxes…

The trench coat

Even layering pros will admit that proper outerwear is a must this week, and the trench coat is the ideal first step. The relaxed yet polished piece is always on trend, so rest assured if you invest in a great one you’ll be wearing it for years to come.

The trench is lightweight, so team it with a chunky cardigan underneath to make it work in chillier temperatures, but it comes into its own on those indecisive autumn weather days where we’re battling showers one minute, then sunshine the next.

The sweater vest

If you held out last year when the knitted tank was having ‘A Moment’, you’ll be pleased to know that its reign as the It knit has continued into this year, so it’s a sound purchase.

It’s easy to see why: a layering hero, it works just as well over a T-shirt as it does with a cotton shirt. It nails that tricky in-between dressing stage where a jumper might feel too cumbersome but a shirt alone doesn’t suffice.

The stompy boots

Even the hardiest of ankles will need to say goodbye to ballerinas and loafers soon as there’s nothing more irritating than soggy shoes. Ankle boots are the answer, and once you put on a comfy pair, I guarantee you won’t want to take them off until March.

A style with a slim ankle will work best with trousers and dresses for the office or the commute, while a chunkier shape looks great off-duty with denim.

The knitted dress

If the colder weather has left you wanting to get as close to loungewear as possible by day, but still sporting an outfit that wouldn’t look out of place in a smarter office, a knitted dress will be your autumn saviour.

With these first signs of cooler temperatures, surprisingly, a loose fit style won’t feel as wintery as you’d imagine and is perfect under a trench coat. Look to wrap or belted styles in neutral shades, and wear with leather accessories.

The wool blazer

A tailored blazer needs little introduction as a trans seasonal hero that works for every occasion, but the chic styles hitting the high street this season deserve some extra air time.

For coloured versions that’ll brighten up autumn looks, Arket should be your first port of call. Those keen on a timeless version with a modern twist (think a slouchy houndstooth or a boxy pinstripe), look to French high street labels Sandro and Maje.

The fine cardigan

We’re not about to suggest you jump from your linen shirt straight into a chunky wintry knit. The current in-between weather calls for a lighter style that won’t look out of place on a sunny afternoon, but will keep you warm on a chilly commute home.

A longline version (which you can wear open over a ribbed vest or T-shirt) in a fine skin-hugging ribbed style is a must-have in any modern autumnal wardrobe. Navy and camel are safe classics to plump for, but chartreuse, Kermit-green and chocolate brown add a new season spin.
