Prison for drunken pubgoer who gave a false name to gardaí at city pub

A highly intoxicated pubgoer gave gardaí a false name when they were called to a pub after he had been refused service, a court heard.

Blake Tobin (39) was jailed for two months after he appeared in custody before Judge Dermot Dempsey at Swords District Court.

The defendant, previously with an address in Blanchardstown but now living in city centre hostel accommodation, admitted public drunkenness and providing a false name to gardaí.

Garda Ashling Moore told Swords District Court that gardaí were called to the Old Boro Pub, Main Street in Swords on January 13 last following reports of a highly intoxicated male.

Gda Moore said Tobin had been refused service and when she spoke to him he gave her a false name. The court heard that Tobin had 104 previous convictions, including a large number for public order matters.

Defence lawyer Annette Kealy said Tobin was a single man who was currently living in hostel accommodation.

Ms Kealy said the defendant had suffered a lot of medical issues in the last year – he had suffered a fracture to his back, which became infected, and he had colitis of the colon.

Ms Kealy said Tobin had a problem with drink and drugs in the past, but had sought help. He had received cognitive behavioural therapy and was now totally drug free.

She said Tobin had been attending AA meetings and had been doing well, but this incident occurred when he fell off the wagon.

Tobin was very sorry for his behaviour, Ms Kealy added.

He will start again and will try again to remain sober, the lawyer said.
