YBs Chance, Villarreal zu distanzieren

YB stellt sich am Mittwoch der dritten Herausforderung in der Champions League. Mit Villarreal wartet im Wankdorf der Europa-League-Sieger und womöglich erste Konkurrent im Rennen um den 3. Platz.

Gut einen Monat liegt der perfekte Auftakt der Young Boys in die Gruppenphase mit dem Heimsieg gegen Manchester United zurück. Und auch wenn die Berner bei Atalanta Bergamo etwas auf den Boden der Tatsachen zurückgeholt wurden, hat der Coup gegen den englischen Giganten YB schlagartig zu einem ernsthaften Konkurrenten um die ersten drei Plätze in dieser Gruppe gemacht.

Nach der Auslosung schien das Heimspiel gegen Villarreal die Partie zu sein, die YB am ehesten Punkte bescheren könnte. Nun befindet sich der Schweizer Meister sogar in der Position, einen ziemlich grossen Schritt Richtung Überwintern im Europacup machen zu können. “Es ist eine spannende Ausgangslage”, sagt David Wagner dazu nur. “Wir wollen wie schon seit Beginn das Bestmögliche herausholen.”

Um klarzustellen, dass sein Team auch gegen Villarreal der klare Aussenseiter ist, ergänzt Wagner: “”Wir brauchen wieder etwas Aussergewöhnliches.” Zumindest zum Teil soll das Extra von den Tribüne kommen, wünscht sich der Deutsche am Dienstag, am Tag seines 50. Geburtstags. “Die Fans sollen die Spieler pushen, damit sie Meter machen, zu denen sie eigentlich gar nicht mehr in der Lage sind”.

Gross, aber nicht riesig

Dass Villarreal als der am ehesten schlagbare Gegner in der Gruppe erschien, hat in erster Linie mit der Qualität der anderen Kontrahenten zu tun und ein bisschen mit dem Leistungsausweis der Spanier. Das Team von Unai Emery, dem früheren Coach von Granit Xhaka bei Arsenal, schaffte es in den letzten zehn Jahren nur einmal unter die ersten vier der spanischen Liga und belegte in der vergangenen Saison den 7. Platz.

Der Gewinn der Europa League im letzten Frühjahr, der auch das Ticket für die Champions League bedeutete, ist der einzige nennenswerte Erfolg in der fast 100-jährigen Vereinsgeschichte von Villarreal CF, dem Aushängeschild der 50’000 Einwohner zählenden Stadt etwas nördlich von der Metropole Valencia.

Robust und technisch stark

Der Höhenflug der Vorsaison mit dem Finalsieg gegen Manchester United steht im Kontrast zur laufenden Negativserie in der Champions League, in der Villarreal seit elf Spielen auf einen Sieg wartet. Auch der Start in die Meisterschaft ist dem Team nicht optimal gelungen, obwohl es bis zum 1:2 gegen Osasuna am letzten Wochenende ungeschlagen war.

Mit Gerard Moreno fehlte der drittbeste Torschütze der letzten spanischen Meisterschaft zuletzt wochenlang. Erst gegen Osasuna gab er nach muskulären Problemen sein Comeback mit einem Tor. Während die Offensive sich schwer tut, funktioniert die Abwehr um Pau Torres, dem zweiten spanischen EM-Teilnehmer vom Sommer neben Moreno. In acht Ligapartien spielte man fünfmal zu null, darunter auch bei Real Madrid.

Auf Wagner hat Villarreal Eindruck gemacht. Er spricht von einer technisch sehr starken Mannschaft mit guten Individualisten in der Offensive und viel Robustheit im Mittelfeld und in der Verteidigung. “Dazu kommt noch die Erfahrung. Das ergibt dann den Mix, wie man die Europa League gewinnen kann.”

YBs perfekte Bilanz

Wie die Young Boys Villarreal Paroli bieten wollen, weiss das Trainerteam bereits. Die Aufstellung steht, erklärte Wagner. Im Gegensatz zum Match in Bergamo können die Berner wieder auf Christian Fassnacht, ihren besten Torschützen, zählen. Vor allem aber spielen sie wieder daheim, auf dem bei den Gegnern unbeliebten Kunstrasen und mit dem Selbstvertrauen des Gastgebers. Die bisherigen vier Heimspiele in der Champions League (inklusive Qualifikation) hat YB gewonnen.
