Rio Ferdinand took aim at Douglas Luiz over his celebration

Rio Ferdinand has sent a brutal message to Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz following Manchester United’s 2-1 win on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag’s side secured the points late on at Villa Park thanks to another Scott McTominay winner. Rasmus Hojlund had given United the lead in the first half, after prodding home from Harry Maguire’s header.

But the Brazilian restored parity in the second half before antagonising defender Raphael Varane with an exuberant celebration. The midfielder was left with egg on his face, however, when McTominay was in the right place at the right time to secure a fourth straight win for United.

Villa still maintain the advantage in the hunt for Champions League football as Unai Emery’s side sit five points clear of United. The win for Ten Hag sees them reduce the gap to fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur to six points with the battle for top-four football heating up.

The hosts were deserved of their goal after testing Andre Onana’s goal on several occasions but the antics of Luiz would’ve added to the bitterness after being pegged back. But it was United who had the last laugh and the former Premier League-winner, Ferdinand, couldn’t help but fire a jibe at the Brazilian.

“U ok @dgoficial (Douglas Luiz),” on X (formerly Twitter), accompanied by a crying face and three laughing emojis.

Roy Keane described the inspiration from McTominay as “huge” with their hopes of earning European football boosted following Sunday’s win. He said: “They’re not over the top, are they?

“Look, they’re enjoying it and there’s an edge to these types of games and that’s helped the team and supporters today. You felt there’d always be a winning goal coming and Hojlund is having a really good goalscoring season now and so is McTominay – that was a huge, huge goal for Manchester United.”
