LIVE – Updated at 12:54

Update: A Currys PC World drop could be happening this week. Read on for more information

The Xbox series X was released nine months ago and Microsoft’s next-gen console is still almost impossible to find online. Supply chain issues coupled with a global shortage of semiconductors have slowed the production of electronics to a crawl.

The Xbox series S, a less powerful console, is easier to find in most UK stores, but the more advanced Xbox series X is in higher demand. New stock appears without warning and sells out in seconds.

That’s why we launched this Xbox series X stock liveblog. Here we will keep you updated on the latest stock drops as soon as they happen. We’ll also share any news on predicted restock dates, milestone events, new games and so much more. If you want to know where to buy an Xbox series X today, we’ve got you covered.

Do Smyths toy stores have any Xbox series X stock?

12:54 , Alistair Charlton

We mentioned in an earlier post how Games runs Twitter accounts for its UK stores, with each announcing when Xbox series X stock arrives. Consoles are usually in very small numbers and sell out quickly, but the Twitter accounts can be a great way to check for offline stock local to you.

Smyths also has a system for checking local store stock. On the Xbox series X page of its website – which is currently showing as out of stock, of course – there’s an option to check stock levels at all of the company’s UK shops. Today these are also listed as sold out, but this isn’t always the case. We spotted a few Xbox series X consoles at Smyths stores yesterday, so there’s every chance more could arrive today or tomorrow.

Check out the Smyths website and click the ‘change store’ button to see availability across the UK.

How much is the Xbox series X through Xbox All Access?

11:58 , Alistair Charlton

© Provided by The Independent (Microsoft)

As we all wait patiently (or otherwise) for Xbox series X stock to arrive in the UK, you might be wondering if paying monthly through Xbox All Access is the way to go. Here’s how it works: You can buy the console outright for £449, or opt to pay monthly through Xbox All Access.

This costs £28.99 a month for 24 months and includes two years of access to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which is a subscription service with over 100 games to play on your shiny new Xbox. These aren’t just old games either, but brand new titles like Microsoft Flight Simulator are there to play.

When you add the £449 Xbox series X to 24 months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which normally costs £10.99 a month, you get a total of £712.76. Yet paying 24 monthly installments of £28.99 for Xbox All Access comes to £695.76. It’s only a saving of £17, but those monthly payments could be far more manageable than stumping up £449 plus the cost of any game you want to own outright.

Can’t wait any longer? Xbox series S stock is widely available right now

11:02 , Alistair Charlton

If you simply can’t wait any longer (and we can hardly blame you) then don’t forget that the Xbox series S is widely available at its £250 retail price. The Microsoft Store has stock for the series S, and so too do many other retailers, like Amazon, Currys PC World, Game, John Lewis, and Very. Stock is low in some places, but restocking happens far more regularly than it does with the Xbox series X.

Oddworld: Soulstorm is coming to the Xbox series X and S

10:00 , Alistair Charlton

While we wait for Xbox series X stock to drop, we bring good news in the form of Oddworld: Soulstorm, which is coming to the Microsoft consoles. There’s no release date just yet, but it’s welcome news for Xbox fans as Oddworld: Soulstorm landed on PC, PS4 and PS5 back in April this year.

The game is a remake of Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus, from 1998. Taking the form of a 2.5D sidescroller, the game sees protagonist Abe scavenge supplies, make weapons and solve puzzles in a bid to rescue his fellow Mudokons from the evil Glukkons.

Is it worth checking local shops for Xbox series X stock?

09:30 , Alistair Charlton

Absolutely. It may feel like searching for the pot of gold at the end of a neverending rainbow, but some retailers share news of local console stock online. A great resource is the Twitter accounts of local Game shops, which tweet when they have Xbox series X (and PS5) stock available.

These are often only held in very small numbers, and currently PS5 consoles are easier to get hold of than the Xbox series X, but it’s still worth keeping an eager eye on Twitter. Game’s local shop Twitter accounts also tweet when pre-owned consoles come into stock, which tend to be available slightly below retail price. For example, we saw an Xbox series S at Game’s Chelmsford store yesterday at £239.99, a saving of £10.

Smyths expects new stock this month

09:17 , Alistair Charlton

With most retailers reluctant to say when fresh Xbox series X stock will arrive, Smyths appears more confident. The toystore currently says Xbox series X stock is expected to arrive in August. With just a couple of weeks of the month left, we’re hopeful that Smyths will have a restock either this week or next.

PlayStation 5 stock is landing at Game this morning

09:06 , Alistair Charlton

This might not be the good news Xbox fans are looking for, but Game has confirmed a PlayStation 5 restock for this morning. There will be no fewer than 27 bundles landing on the retailer’s website in the next few hours. These bundles are priced from £464.98 for PS5 disc edition with a “Player1” T-shirt, up to £599.97 for a bundle that includes the PS5 disc edition with an additional dual sense controller and a pulse 3D gaming headset.

When to expect Xbox series X stock at AO

08:59 , Alistair Charlton

There’s a lot to be said about the language used by retailers on their Xbox series X pages. Some simply say the console is out of stock, while others offer a glimmer of hope. For example, the electronics retailer AO says how the Xbox series X will be “back in stock soon”, and – along with Very and Currys PC World – AO is well overdue a restock. Might today be the day? We’re keeping our fingers crossed…

Welcome to your Xbox series X stock tracking guide

08:24 , Ellie Fry

Welcome back to the Xbox stock tracking liveblog. We’re monitoring every UK retailer at once to alert you to any restocks as soon they happen, as well as keeping you up to date with the latest rumours, predictions, games and more.

Admittedly, it’s been a quiet old week in the land of Microsoft’s Xbox series X, but our optimism that we’ll find you a console is not waning. In fact, we’ve got a good feeling about today – Currys PC World, AO, Very and Asda are all well overdue a restock, so we might just see the end of their dry spell.

Without further ado, let’s go on an Xbox hunt.

Another day, another dollar (not spent on an Xbox series X because we’re yet to have a stock drop). But, all is not lost because there’s always tomorrow. And maybe retailers are holding out for a drop closer to the weekend for extra excitement? Who knows!

We’ve still got our eye on Currys PC World, but AO’s “back in stock” banner also hints at a potential restock very soon. It really is all to play for.

To be in on the chance of securing the all-new Xbox series X, you’ll just have to check back in on this liveblog bright and early tomorrow. We’ll catch you then!

Buying Xbox series X at Box

Wednesday 18 August 2021 16:35 , Eva Waite-Taylor

The last time the Xbox series X was in stock at Box was on 27 July, and it was part of a bundle containing an extra controller and a Thrustmaster racing wheel. The bundle cost £689, considerably more than purchasing the £449 console by itself.

Box runs a ballot for customers to register their interest and be in with a chance to be selected at random to buy a console. When it’s open, you can register for the ballot here. The retailer is expected to launch similar ballots as more stock arrives.

The best VPN for Xbox series X

Wednesday 18 August 2021 15:35 , Eva Waite-Taylor

The Xbox series X has excellent built-in security when playing games online, but there are still reasons why you might want to install a VPN on an Xbox.

If you use your Xbox to watch Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video or some other online streaming service, a VPN allows you to spoof your location and access TV shows and movies not normally available in your country.

To keep your Xbox series X running at peak performance, you’ll want to make sure the VPN you choose is fast and responsive enough to avoid lag and dropouts when playing online – read our round-up of the best VPNs for torrenting, streaming and gaming:

What is Xbox All Access?

Wednesday 18 August 2021 14:35 , Eva Waite-Taylor

© Provided by The Independent (Microsoft)

Game and Smyths sold the Xbox series X exclusively through the Xbox All Access programme last week. But what is that exactly?

Xbox All Access is a payment plan that lets you spread the cost of the Xbox series X or Xbox series S over two years. Rather than pay £449 for the console upfront, you pay 24 monthly instalments of £28.99.

This includes two years of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, the games subscription service allowing you to access more than 100 games on demand, including the likes of Microsoft Flight Simulator (£59.99, Argos.co.uk). Xbox Game Pass Ultimate usually costs £10.99 per month.

That works out as £712 worth of stuff for £695, meaning Xbox All Access is pretty good value for money. Now you just need to find an Xbox in stock. Stick with us and we’ll alert you as soon as consoles are available.

Microsoft is testing a 4K Xbox series X dashboard

Wednesday 18 August 2021 12:50 , Eva Waite-Taylor

Yes, you read that right. Microsoft announced that it’s testing a new update to Xbox series X connected to a 4K display, which will make it look crisper and shaper.

The console currently runs its dashboard at 1080px, but the change means that the home, guide and other areas of the dashboard will be “displayed in a higher native resolution for increased sharpness and text readability”, said Microsoft. At this stage, it is exclusively for Xbox Insiders and Alpha Skip-Ahead users.

The Xbox series X headset to buy

Wednesday 18 August 2021 12:20 , Eva Waite-Taylor

Microsoft assumes you’ll already have a headset, so the Xbox series X does not come with one. But, if you want to get the full experience, we’d recommend upgrading yours, even if you’ve not yet managed to secure the all-new console.

When to expect John Lewis Xbox series X restock

Wednesday 18 August 2021 12:05 , Eva Waite-Taylor

Much like all other retailers, the Xbox series X is currently out of stock at John Lewis & Partners. The last drops we’ve seen have been in mid-June, late April, and on two occasions in March, each time selling out in a very short space of time, as you’d expect.

The online retailer usually adds new items to the website in the early hours of the morning — around 7am. So we recommend setting your alarm to really be in with the chance of winning.

We’ve also heard reports of in-store drops at John Lewis & Partners, so we’d always recommend checking in with your local store on the off chance that they have any of the next-gen consoles lying about.

The weird and wonderful Xbox merch, from a mini fridge to cakes

Wednesday 18 August 2021 11:50 , Eva Waite-Taylor

The Xbox series X launched in November 2020 and has been plagued by supply and demand issues. But, during that time we’ve seen a whole host of weird and wonderful Xbox merch.

© Provided by The Independent (Microsoft)

Case in point, in June, Microsoft announced that it would be releasing an Xbox series X-themed mini fridge that would launch during the “holiday 2021”. We’re hoping its arrival will coincide with Christmas and it won’t be as hard to get hold of as the console. For all the details, you can watch the premiere on the Xbox YouTube channel.

Similarly, while Tesco has not taken to the Xbox series X hype very well (i.e. it hasn’t stocked it), it has delivered on the goods in a rather sweet way (pardon the pun).

For those of you that have not had much luck securing the console, you can now settle for celebration cake (£13, Tesco.com)…

Xbox ‘back in stock soon’ at AO

Wednesday 18 August 2021 11:35 , Eva Waite-Taylor

© Provided by The Independent (AO)

The Xbox series X is still sold out at AO. But, we’ve spotted that a change has been made to the console’s product page.

The all-new device had previously been listed as “out of stock”, but now it says “back in stock soon”. Something similar usually happens at the likes of AmazonGame and Currys PC World ahead of a “big” restock.

Whenever AO does restock, you do need to know a few tips in order to make sure you can be in with the chance of winning because the “add to basket” button will stay firmly greyed out, despite the console actually being available to purchase.

Here’s what you need to do. This only works on Google Chrome on the desktop:

  • On the AO website, copy the Xbox series X’s product code, and paste it somewhere safe. You can find this code by right click on the Xbox’s product page, selecting ‘Inspect’ and searching for ‘productCode’. The most recent bundle was product code “RRT-00007AO-KTS1”
  • Now navigate to any random item on AO’s website. You’re just looking for a working ‘add to basket’ button
  • Right-click on the green ‘add to basket’ button beneath the random item and click ‘Inspect’. In the panel that appears at the side of the screen, replace the random product’s code with the Xbox’s product code. It’s the series of numbers and letters that immediately follows ‘data-productcode=’
  • You’ve recoded this product’s working ‘add to basket’ button to point it to the in-stock Xbox. Well done Edward Snowden
  • Now click the button, the Xbox will slide into your basket

AO, Let’s GO!

The latest on Very’s Xbox series X restock

Wednesday 18 August 2021 11:20 , Eva Waite-Taylor

Much like Amazon, Very is long overdue an Xbox series X restock.

The retailer last had the Xbox series X in stock on 20 July. There was a long wait and once you got through you could choose from one of a number of optional bundles, including three months of Game Pass and an additional controller.

The retailer is currently selling the less powerful Xbox series S (£249.99, Very.co.uk), with similar options available on bundles and add-ons, which is certainly worth considering.

Is the Xbox series X in stock at Amazon?

Wednesday 18 August 2021 11:05 , Eva Waite-Taylor

© Provided by The Independent (The Independent)

Amazon’s done a good job at regularly restocking the PS5, but the retail giant isn’t showing the same level of love to the Xbox series X. The retailer hasn’t restocked Microsoft’s new console since 14 July, and even then the Xbox sold out in seconds.

Amazon requires PS5 shoppers to have a Prime account before they can grab Sony’s console, but there are no restrictions on who can buy an Xbox – meaning automated bots and scalpers can swoop in and stockpile as much as they can. Legitimate shoppers, like us, have to be especially quick.

Here are our top tips for securing the console:

  • Make sure to use Amazon Smile – a separate website that gives a portion of the cost of your purchase toward a chosen charity of your choice. Amazon Smile gets a lot less traffic than the regular Amazon website, so if there are issues, Smile should work better.
  • Add the console to your wish list and then add it to your basket – apparently, people have found more success this way

Xbox series X price in the UK

Wednesday 18 August 2021 10:50 , Eva Waite-Taylor

Wondering how much the Xbox series X costs? It’s £449.

There’s also the Xbox All Access programme, where you pay nothing upfront and get an Xbox series X console and 24 months of Game Pass Ultimate for £28.99 per month. At the end of the 24-month term, you keep the console.

The all-digital Xbox series S console costs £249 (Amazon.co.uk) and is more often in stock than the more powerful Xbox series X. The Xbox series S is also available through the Xbox All Access programme for £20.99 per month.

Bundles have been spotted, but they’re rare. Online retailer Very bundled the console with an extra controller when it had stock of the console. Currys PC World sells the console with three months of Game Pass for £479. But with the base consoles in such limited supply, don’t expect to see great deals on bundles anytime soon.

When will Smyths Toys have the Xbox series X in stock?

Wednesday 18 August 2021 10:20 , Eva Waite-Taylor

© Provided by The Independent (The Independent)

Smyths has done a (very) small number of drops in its physical stores this week, but it could have more stock arriving soon. Our fingers are crossed for an online restock.

The retailer restocked the Xbox All Access programme on 5 August. And last week, Smyths Toys in Ireland restocked the basic Xbox series X console, though it wasn’t available to purchase from the UK.

We also hear that it’s possible to find the console in certain physical stores. If you have a local branch it’s worth dropping in and asking about availability.

When the Xbox is in stock online, Smyths is one of three retailers – along with Game and 4Gadgets – to offer the Xbox All Access programme, a pay-as-you-go alternative to buying the console at full price. You pay £28.99 per month for 24 months, get Xbox Game Pass Ultimate thrown in, and own the console at the end of the term.

‘Apex Legends’ next-gen update for Xbox series X

Wednesday 18 August 2021 09:55 , Eva Waite-Taylor

Apex Legends – a free-to-play battle royale game – is already one of the world’s most popular titles. While it’s available to play on the all-new Xbox series X via backwards compatibility, the developer, Resapwan, has said it’s still planning to release an update for the game that has “more formal enhancements”.

Director of communications Ryan Rigley didn’t give anything away and simply wrote: “I WISH I had an update to share but we can’t say anything definitive at the moment—so can’t spoil anything here. Trust us tho, it’s in the works and we’re excited about it too.”

Microsoft’s early morning Xbox series X drop

Wednesday 18 August 2021 09:40 , Eva Waite-Taylor

If any of you were awake between the hours of 02:38am and 02:44am and 04:43am and 04:46am, you may have seen the Microsoft drop of the all-new Xbox series X.

From what we can tell, this was a very small drop and perhaps a result of returns (we’re just wondering who really would return it?!). But, it gives us a nice indication that a bigger restock could be on the horizon from Microsoft. We’re forever optimistic.

Xbox series X console at Asda and Tesco

Supermarkets are no longer just places in which you do your weekly food shop, you can now buy a whole manner of things there. Case in point: games consoles (when they’re in stock).

It’s not looking like the best news for those who collect clubcard points, because Tesco, the UK’s biggest retailer, hasn’t had any Xbox series X stock since launch, and doesn’t seem too bothered about restocking Microsoft’s next-gen console.

What about Asda? Well, its online store had the Xbox series X in stock in the run-up to Christmas and did a small drop in May that went in minutes. But since then the console has been sold out.

Asda gives no indication of when it expects new stock to arrive, but it’s worth keeping an eye on the store page over the coming weeks for fresh availability because who knows, today could be your lucky day!

Can you use Xbox Game Pass on PC?

Wednesday 18 August 2021 09:10 , Eva Waite-Taylor

The simple answer is yes! You can use Xbox Game Pass on your PC.

For the uninitiated, Xbox Game Pass allows you to pay a flat monthly fee to access a rolling library of hundreds of games, rather than purchasing games outright. It also lets you play games via cloud streaming – which is essentially like being on a Zoom call with a game you’re controlling.

Launched back in 2017, Xbox Game Pass was billed as gaming’s answer to Netflix. The service unlocks a library of more than 100 games, which you are free to download and play at your leisure, so long as you keep paying the subscription fee.

The PC-only version and the standard console-only version of Xbox Game Pass both cost £7.99 (or $9.99) per month.

Will Xbox series X be in stock at Currys today?

Wednesday 18 August 2021 08:55 , Eva Waite-Taylor

Currys PC World’s last drop was minuscule on 10 August, with shoppers having the best luck by purchasing the console through the Currys app.

Rumours circulating at the end of last week indicated that there would be a stock drop over the weekend, but this did not materialise. So, we’ve been eagerly anticipating something ever since.

It goes without saying, as soon as we have intel, you’ll be the first to know.

Throughout August, Xbox will be adding new games to its Games with Gold scheme. From 1 August gamers have been able to download Darkside III and from today (16 August), Yooka-Laylee, and Garou Mow have become available.

Differences between the Xbox series X and series S

Tuesday 17 August 2021 14:00 , Eva Waite-Taylor

© Provided by The Independent (Microsoft)

There are a grand total of two next-gen Xboxes: Xbox series S and the Xbox series X.

They both run the same next-gen games (as well as older Xbox games through backwards compatibility), but the cheaper Xbox series S (£249, Amazon.co.uk) has less processing power. This means graphics won’t look as detailed and performance may be a little slower.

For that reason, the Xbox series X is considered to be the “true” next-generation console here – but both consoles are excellent games machines. The Xbox series S has another big advantage in that it’s much easier to find in stock than the Xbox series X.

The Xbox series S costs £249 (Amazon.co.uk), which looks positively cheap compared to the Xbox series X at £449 (Amazon.co.uk).

‘Fall Guys’ on Xbox series X: What you need to know

Tuesday 17 August 2021 13:15 , Eva Waite-Taylor

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, the multiplayer battle royale game, launched exclusively on PC and PS4 last year. The developers, Mediatonic, then announced it would put Fall Guys on the Xbox and Nintendo Switch with a release date touted for summer 2021. But, Mediatonic has since been pushed back to “later this year”.

The hype is currently real. So, we’ll endeavour to keep you updated with a more exact release date as soon as we hear anything. The only good thing about the later date is it gives us a little longer to find you an Xbox series X to play it on.

Xbox Game Pass vs PlayStation Now: What’s the difference?

Tuesday 17 August 2021 12:30 , Eva Waite-Taylor

Microsoft and Sony both offer a number of game streaming services.

PlayStation Now and Xbox Game Pass allow players to pay a flat monthly fee to access a rolling library of hundreds of games, rather than purchasing games outright. Both services also let you play games via cloud streaming – which is essentially like being on a Zoom call with a game you’re controlling.

Launched back in 2017, Xbox Game Pass was billed as gaming’s answer to Netflix. The service unlocks a library of more than 100 games, which subscribers are free to download and play at their leisure, so long as they keep paying their subscription fee. PlayStation Now lets players download games or stream them online.

Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus are the respective console’s subscription plans for multiplayer gaming and also offer free games as benefits. Xbox Live Gold is included with Xbox Game Pass and many predict the two will eventually be combined into a single subscription.

Xbox Game Pass 2021: Is it worth the money?

Can I buy an Xbox series X in an actual shop?

Tuesday 17 August 2021 12:15 , Eva Waite-Taylor

In the early days, the Xbox series X was rarely spotted in the wild, but they really do exist!

There’s been a number of in-store restocks at the likes of John Lewis & Partners, Game and Smyths Toys, all while the retailers’ online stores reported the Xbox as being sold out.

We keep tabs on the availability in physical stores around the country as best we can, based on tips, social media posts and reports from happy shoppers.

In-store restocks tend to sell out just as fast as online ones, so your best chance of finding an Xbox out there in the real world is to stroll into your local stores and let them know you’re interested. It’s as easy as that.

What is Xbox All Access?

Tuesday 17 August 2021 12:00 , Eva Waite-Taylor

© Provided by The Independent (Xbox)

Game and Smyths sold the Xbox series X exclusively through the Xbox All Access programme two weeks ago. But what is that exactly?

Xbox All Access is a payment plan that lets you spread the cost of the Xbox series X or Xbox series S over two years. Rather than pay £449 for the console upfront, you pay 24 monthly instalments of £28.99.

It includes two years of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which is the games subscription service that gives you access to more than 100 games on-demand, including the likes of Microsoft Flight Simulator (£59.99, Argos.co.uk) and usually costs £10.99 per month.

That works out as £712 worth of stuff for £695, meaning Xbox All Access is pretty good value for money.

All you need to do is find an Xbox in stock. Stay with us and we’ll alert you as soon as consoles are available.

If you’ve already secured the elusive console, congratulations. And even if you’ve not, it’s still good to get prepared ahead of its arrival, so you can play as soon as it arrives. This headset is a must-have if you plan on using voice chat since it features auto-mute and voice isolation to reduce noise interruption for crystal-clear chat. It has 15 hours of battery life and can connect to mobile devices as well as your Xbox thanks to Bluetooth.

The Xbox series X doesn’t come with its own headset because Microsoft assumes you’ve got one already, so make sure you snap this up now.

Xbox series X in 4K

Tuesday 17 August 2021 11:30 , Eva Waite-Taylor

Microsoft has announced that it’s testing a new update to Xbox series X connected to a 4K display, which will make it look crisper and shaper. According to the statement, the change means that the home, guide and other areas of the dashboard will be “displayed in a higher native resolution for increased sharpness and text readability”. This is exclusively for Xbox Insiders and Alpha Skip-Ahead users.

To make sure that your Xbox series X is always looking as sharp as can be, it’s worth reading our guide to the best 4K TVs – spoiler, this Panasonic TX-50HX800B (£598, Argos.co.uk) was considered the best for gaming. Read the full review now:

‘Fifa 22’ on Xbox is available to pre-order now

Tuesday 17 August 2021 11:00 , Eva Waite-Taylor

Launching 1 October, Fifa 22 is available to pre-order now. There is a whole range of new and exciting features that will be exclusive to those with the next-gen console.

Chief among them is more detailed commentary, in which individual player milestones, goal records, winning streaks and your team’s league performance are all remarked upon by commentators. Plus, if you’re not playing well, crowds will start to filter out of the stadium early.

The cheapest we’ve found EA’s upcoming footie game is at Very, where it can be picked up for £64.99. The digital edition of Fifa 22 can also be pre-ordered through EA Play on Xbox series X for £62.99.

Very Xbox series X restock

Tuesday 17 August 2021 10:45 , Eva Waite-Taylor

Very is overdue a restock. The last time it did an Xbox series X drop was nearly a month ago on 20 July when gamers had to wait in a very long queue to nab a bundle, including three months of Game Pass and an additional controller.

For a while, the retailer restocked the PS5 and Xbox at the same time. While this must’ve been a real nightmare for everyone at Very, it did make predicting stock a little bit easier for us.

But all that’s a thing of the past. Very no longer sells both consoles at the same time, so once again we’re left guessing when the next restock of the Xbox series X will be. We think it could happen this week.

The less powerful Xbox series S (£249.99, Very.co.uk), with similar options available on bundles and add-ons, is currently available to buy though.

How to buy Xbox series X at BT

Tuesday 17 August 2021 10:30 , Eva Waite-Taylor

In order to buy Microsoft’s all-new console through BT, you have to be a BT customer and register your interest in the Xbox series X.

When BT has it in stock, you’ll receive an email containing a code, which will take you directly to the order page where, you guessed it, you can buy the console. The code will be unique to your email, so only you will be able to purchase the device.

For those who are not BT customers, we’d always recommend registering your interest at different retailers, so you’re on top of any email-only drops.

Xbox series X restock news at Argos

Tuesday 17 August 2021 10:15 , Eva Waite-Taylor

Argos last restocked the week before last. As such, it’s unlikely that we’ll see the retailer restock Microsoft’s next-gen console this week because it tends to make new consoles available once every four weeks on average.

The best way to buy an Xbox series X from Argos is through the app and by adding the console to your wish list. You have better luck checking out by following the link on your wish list page rather than through the product page.

What are the chances of an Xbox restock at Game?

Tuesday 17 August 2021 10:00 , Eva Waite-Taylor

© Provided by The Independent (iStock/The Independent)

Game last restocked the Xbox series X on 13 August, and before that on 3 August, so it’s had a particularly good run. But, since then we’ve had nothing. Judging by the 10-day pattern, could we expect the next drop on 23 August? Fingers crossed.

Game’s Twitter feed usually gives a heads up whenever new consoles are being made available. But it’s also worth checking the website to see if your local store has stock.

Waiting on Currys to drop? Us too

Tuesday 17 August 2021 09:45 , Eva Waite-Taylor

Currys PC World was due to drop its stock over the weekend, but in true Xbox restock style, it’s fashionably late.

The last time the new-gen console was in stock was on 10 August, so not that long ago. But, shoppers had the best luck purchasing it through the Currys app, so it’s well worth downloading that to be in with of a win.

What’s more, we’d definitely recommend signing up for stock notifications from the retailer. That, coupled with following this liveblog, will give you the best possible chance.

What about PS5 stock?

Tuesday 17 August 2021 09:30 , Eva Waite-Taylor

One small consolation for Microsoft is that its biggest rival, Sony, is also facing serious supply chain issues. The PlayStation 5 is in high demand but it’s a little easier to find on the shelves than the Xbox series X.

We have a good idea of which retailers are most likely to restock the PS5 next, but you still have to be quick to grab one when they appear.

Will Smyths drop the Xbox series X today?

Tuesday 17 August 2021 09:15 , Eva Waite-Taylor

© Provided by The Independent (The Independent)

The all-new console came into stock in a number of local Smyths stores yesterday, including Sunderland, Bury and Sheffield. Having checked this morning, it looks as though the Bradford store has a small number in stock. If you live nearby: Run, don’t walk!

Smyths Toys is one of three retailers stocking the Xbox All Access programme and the Xbox series X was last available to purchase through that programme online on 5 August. So, its next online stock drop might not be as imminent as we’d like. But, we remain optimistic.

Good morning Xbox hunters!

Welcome back to the Xbox stock tracking liveblog. We’re monitoring every UK retailer at once to alert you to any Xbox restocks as soon they happen, as well as keeping you up to date with the latest rumours and predictions.

Yesterday Smyths Toys restocked the Xbox series X in local stores around the country, and that’s about it – so not as fruitful as we’d like. But, thankfully there’s always today.

We’ve got our eye on Currys this morning, which was due to drop over the weekend and didn’t. Without further ado, let’s go Xbox series X hunting!

Your Xbox stock trackers are off

Monday 16 August 2021 17:30 , Eva Waite-Taylor

So the fabled Currys PC World restock didn’t materialise over the weekend or this morning, but we did see a number of local Smyths Toys stores showing the next-gen console back in stock.

As always, we remain hopeful for tomorrow. Fingers crossed the Xbox gods answer our prayers and give us the goods. We’ll of course be back bright and early, so join us to make sure you’re the first to know when the Xbox series X makes another appearance.

Until then, have a nice evening!

Xbox Game Pass vs PlayStation Now

Monday 16 August 2021 15:50 , Eva Waite-Taylor

Microsoft and Sony both offer a number of game streaming services.

PlayStation Now and Xbox Game Pass allow gamers to pay a flat monthly fee to access a rolling library of hundreds of games, rather than purchasing games outright.

Xbox series X vs Xbox series S: What’s the difference?

Monday 16 August 2021 13:05 , Eva Waite-Taylor

© Provided by The Independent (Microsoft)

There are a grand total of two next-gen Xboxes, the less powerful Xbox series S and the more advanced Xbox series X.

They both run the same next-gen games (as well as older Xbox games through backwards compatibility), but the cheaper Xbox series S has less processing power under the bonnet.

The Xbox series S costs £249 (Amazon.co.uk), which looks positively bargainous compared to the Xbox series X at £449 (Amazon.co.uk).

The Xbox wireless headset (£89.99, Game.co.uk) is essential if you plan on using voice chat. You can use auto-mute and voice isolation to reduce noise interruption, making for crystal clear conversation.

The next-gen console doesn’t come with its own headset because Microsoft assumes you’ve got one already. But, your existing Xbox One headset will work.

The best VPN for Xbox series X

Monday 16 August 2021 12:05 , Eva Waite-Taylor

The Xbox series X has excellent built-in security when playing games online, but there are still reasons why you might want to install a VPN on an Xbox.

If you use your Xbox to watch Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video or some other online streaming service, a VPN allows you to spoof your location and access TV shows and movies not normally available in your country.

To keep your Xbox series X running at peak performance, you’ll want to make sure the VPN you choose is fast and responsive enough to avoid lag and dropouts when playing online – check out our round-up of the best VPNs for torrenting, streaming and gaming:

Is the Xbox series X in stock at Amazon?

Monday 16 August 2021 11:50 , Eva Waite-Taylor

Amazon has restocked the PS5, but the retail giant, unfortunately, hasn’t shown as much love to the Xbox series X. The last restock was on 14 July, but it was quickly snaffled up by stock hungry shoppers.

Amazon requires PS5 shoppers to have a Prime account before they can grab Sony’s console, but there are no restrictions on who can buy an Xbox – meaning automated bots and scalpers can swoop in and stockpile. This means we, the legitimate shoppers, have to be very fast.

What are the chances of an Argos restock this week?

Monday 16 August 2021 10:50 , Eva Waite-Taylor

The chances of a restock at Argos are slim because the retailer restocked the Xbox series X the week before last, so it is unlikely to have anything left in its chamber until September. But, we would never rule anything out!

It’s worth noting that Argos generally restocks between 12:45am and 2:45am, or at 8am. And we’d recommend adding the console to your wishlist to be in with the chance of securing it when it’s back.

Smyths Xbox series X stock update

Monday 16 August 2021 09:20 , Eva Waite-Taylor

© Provided by The Independent (The Independent)

Smyths Toys is currently sold out of the Xbox series X, but could have more stock arriving soon.

The retailer restocked the Xbox All Access programme on 5 August. And during that week, Smyths Toys in Ireland restocked the basic Xbox series X console, though it wasn’t available to purchase from the UK.

When will John Lewis restock Xbox series X?

New stock briefly appeared at John Lewis & Partners in mid-June, late April, and on two occasions again in March, each time selling out in a very short space of time.
