'Too much too much' Andrew Scott walks away from extremely awkward BBC interview on BAFTA red carpet

What a night it was for Andrew Scott on Sunday, walking the red carpet at the BAFTAs with extreme pride as his film All Of Us Strangers was nominated in a slew of categories.

Andrew and his co-star Paul Mescal have received so much critical acclaim for their portrayal of Adam and Harry in the movie voted most likely to make you cry this year.

So you’d have to wonder: Why did the BBC’s correspondent on the red carpet only want to talk to Andrew about Barry Keoghan? More than that, why did he keep prodding when Andrew was CLEARLY uncomfortable?!

Entertainment correspondent Colin Paterson is the one making headlines himself following the exchange- and it’s fair to say he’s probably cringing watching it all back.

It started out innocently enough, when Colin asked Andrew if he knew his fellow countryman well. ‘I know Barry, yeah’ Andrew said, looking slightly puzzled and no doubt wondering where this was all going.

Andrew Scott interviewed by Colin Paterson of the BBC.

‘What was your reaction when you first saw the naked dance scene at the end of Saltburn?’ Colin asked, as someone in the background could heard shouting ‘No spoilers please!’

Andrew looked even more confused and tried to side step the question, saying ‘Listen I won’t spoil it for anybody but it’s great, it’s great…’ Colin wasn’t taking the hint though and her persisted, insisting Andrew could ‘spoil away.’

Film review: Andrew Scott’s truly great in orphan tale that’ll move many to tears

‘There is a lot of talk about prosthetics- how well do you know him?’ Colin asked, excited by his own line of questioning. Andrew’s face turned and he kind of grimaced as he turned on his heel and walked away. ‘Too much! too much!’ Colin laughed as he turned back to the camera.

What was he thinking? The moment has been met with outrage online. ‘This is frankly disgusting. Andrew Scott is there to support his multiple nominated film and THIS is what you ask? Then when he looks visibly uncomfortable the guy carried on. Truly horrid.’ said one.

Another said Andrew deserves an apology for being put on the spot like that. ‘There’s is something so deeply homophobic about asking Andrew Scott a gay man this weird ass question about Barry’s scene in Saltburn?? ask him about all of us strangers the BAFTA nominated film he is in… “how well do you know Barry” Andrew deserves an apology from the BBC.’

‘And the award for ‘most awkward cringe-worthy @BAFTA red carpet question ever’ goes to…the #BBC#AndrewScott rightly just wanting to [run emoji]’ said another.

Considering the fact that there was quiet outrage for the fact that Andrew didn’t receive a BAFTA nomination when the nominees were announced last month, it’s truly bizarre that Colin Paterson thought this would be the most interesting line he could get out of Andrew.

Unfortunately on the night, despite six nominations, All Of Us Strangers came away empty handed.
