Woman suffers spinal injuries at concert

A young woman was left with a ‘catastrophic spinal injury’ after the lead singer of an Australian punk rock band dove into the audience to crowd surf.

Bird Piche, 24, was left ‘scared’ and unable to move after singer John Floreani, from  Newcastle-based band Trophy Eyes, jumped into the mosh pit at their show in Buffalo, New York, last Tuesday.

The band said in a statement they were ‘truly heartbroken’ by the incident but have decided to continue their 2024 US tour.

‘This situation has shaken us all to our core, and we ask for patience while we look to help Bird navigate this difficult time. Please, keep Bird in your thoughts,’ the statement said, news.com.au reported.

‘We remain in close contact with them and will expand on this as new news arrives.’

The show, at Buffalo’s Mohawk Place, was immediately stopped and Floreani accompanied Ms Piche to hospital with her family.

Disturbing footage shared online shows the moment Floreani leapt into the crowd, a stunt often performed at the band’s gigs.

One commenter who claimed to be standing behind Ms Piche as Floreani dove from the stage said the singer was ‘clearly devastated’ after realising he’d hurt her.

‘As soon as we heard her say she was scared and couldn’t move we knew it wasn’t good,’ they wrote.

‘I am curious how this will affect the rest of the tour.’

Another commenter said Ms Piche was injured just two minutes into the band’s first song.

‘I left immediately once I saw the state she was in,’ they said.

Trophy Eyes have donated $5,000 to a GoFundMe for Ms Piche’s medical bills and loss of income.

The fundraiser’s organiser, a close family friend, said the 24-year-old has already undergone ‘extensive surgery’.

‘She has a long recovery ahead and will need all the help she can get,’ she wrote.

‘It is still too early to know what her prognosis is but after leaving the hospital she will need to go to a rehab facility. She will obviously not be able to work during this time.’

Buffalo’s Mohawk Place manager Mike Thor said the venue has a strict ‘no moshing’ policy.

‘There are signs posted everywhere in the venue and notice was included in the emails for this show with the show’s promoter and the band themselves,’ he said in a statement.

‘Our policy and practised procedure is a full show stop for any stage diving which was put into place for this incident.

‘Currently we are working to put together a charity show to help the injured party with their GoFundMe.’
