woman stabbed on spadina streetcar, female suspect arrested

A woman in her 20s was stabbed during and altercation on a southbound Spadina TTC streetcar around 2 p.m. at the Sussex Ave. stop. The alleged attacker was arrested at the scene and a knife was recovered. on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2023.

Violence on the TTC continued Tuesday afternoon with a woman in her 20s stabbed around 2 p.m. on a streetcar at Spadina Ave. and Sussex Ave., just south of Bloor St.

Toronto Police say the victim was stabbed multiple times in the head and face and taken to hospital but was in stable condition and a female suspect in her 40s was arrested and is expected to be charged with aggravated assault.

“When officers arrived the suspect was still on scene and has been taken into custody,” Duty Insp. Lori Kranenburg told reporters at the scene.

Kranenberg said “initial reports” were that the victim and the suspect were unknown to each other but authorities were awaiting video footage from the streetcar to see how the incident unfolded.

A knife was recovered on the scene.

“Toronto Police is asking that if anyone was present on the streetcar at the time that this incident occurred and if you did not remain to speak with Toronto Police if you could please contact 14 Division at 416-808-1400,” she said.

The stabbing follows another alarming incident on Monday around 3:35 p.m. when two TTC employees suffered minor injuries after being swarmed on a bus by 10 to 15 young people in Scarborough.

Police said the assaults happened on a bus in the area of Kennedy and Merrian roads, south of Eglinton Ave. E.

The two employees were treated on the scene and a third employee, the bus driver, was traumatized by the attack, according to the TTC.

TTC spokesperson Stuart Green called Monday and earlier attacks on the transit system “despicable.”

The Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 113, said in a news release on Monday that the violence against their employees was “getting out of hand.”

Through extensive investigation and review of TTC video surveillance, four male suspects were identified and arrested.

Police on Tuesday said four boys — all age 13 — have been charged. Two boys were charged with assault and the other two boys were charged with two counts of assault.

On Saturday around 6:30 p.m., a TTC operator was also shot with a BB gun while waiting to begin her shift near the intersection of Markham Rd. and Progress Ave. in Scarborough.

A black sedan drove by and she was shot at but didn’t suffer any injuries.

Kranenberg said Toronto Police is working in conjunction with the city and the TTC to address ongoing safety issues on public transit.

“We are working to increase our presence on the system but as has been said before by others, we can’t be everywhere at all times,” she said.

“So we’re just asking people to continue to be aware of your surroundings. If you see something report it and then we will respond and investigate appropriately.”
