Apr 9, 2019; Cleveland, OH, USA; NBA referee Brent Barnaky (36) makes a call in the second quarter of a game between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Charlotte Hornets at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

The Minnesota Timberwolves aim to maintain an upward trajectory when they visit the Washington Wizards on Wednesday. Minnesota is 7-1 in the last eight games, improving to 11-10 overall. Washington is 7-2 at home and 13-8 overall this season. Anthony Edwards (illness) and Jarred Vanderbilt (illness) are listed as questionable for Minnesota, with Jaden McDaniels (illness) and Patrick Beverley (adductor) ruled out. Thomas Bryant (knee), Rui Hachimura (personal) and Aaron Holiday (illness) are out for Washington.

Caesars Sportsbook lists Washington as a 4.5-point favorite, and tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. The total number of points Vegas thinks will be scored, or the over-under, is 217 in the latest odds. Why the Timberwolves can cover

The Wolves are excelling on defense this season, but Minnesota also has star power on offense. Karl-Anthony Towns is one of the best big men in the NBA, averaging 23.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game this season. Towns is shooting 51.3 percent from the floor and a blistering 44.0 percent from three-point range, and he is a multi-faceted scorer. Towns is joined by another No. 1 overall pick in Edwards, who is averaging 22.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.6 steals per contest.

In addition to that high-level scoring upside, the Wolves are dominating on the offensive glass, securing 31 percent of their own missed shots. That leads to the NBA’s No. 1 mark in second-chance points (16.9 per game), and Minnesota ranks near the top of the NBA in three-point attempt rate and fast break points per game (13.5 per game). This is also a favorable matchup in which to be aggressive, with the Wizards ranking dead-last in the NBA in turnovers created (11.5 per game) and steals (6.3 per game).

Why the Wizards can cover

Washington is off to a strong start, with notable strengths on both ends of the floor. The Wizards are shooting 54 percent on two-point attempts, and Washington ranks in the top five of the NBA in points in the paint (49.2 per game). The Wizards are also a top-10 team in free throw creation, and Minnesota allows more free throw attempts (24.3 per game) than any NBA team. The T-Wolves are also dead-last in the league in defensive rebound rate (68.1 percent), and that opens the door for second-chance opportunities.

On the opposite end, the Wizards are allowing the fewest three-point attempts in the NBA and holding teams to 49.3 percent on two-point shots. Washington is excellent in transition, limiting the opposition to 8.9 fast break points per game, and the Wizards are above-average on the defensive glass. Minnesota is also shooting just 43 percent from the field and turning the ball over on 16.0 percent of offensive possessions.

How to make Timberwolves vs. Wizards picks

SportsLine’s model is leaning over on the point total, with 12 players projected to score at least eight points. The model also says one side of the spread hits in almost 60 percent of simulations. You can only see the model’s Wizards vs. Timberwolves pick at SportsLine.
