Winteruniversiade Luzern 2021 wegen Omikron abgesagt

Zwölf Tage vor der geplanten Eröffnung ist die Winteruniversiade Luzern 2021 am Montag abgesagt worden. Die Organisatoren des internationalen Hochschulsportanlasses begründen dies mit den jüngsten Entwicklungen der Corona-Pandemie.

Die Winteruniversiade ist nach den Olympischen Winterspielen der grösste Multisportanlass, der im Winter stattfindet. Die 30. Ausgabe hätte vom 11. bis 21. Dezember 2021 an verschiedenen Orten in der Zentralschweiz und in Graubünden stattfinden sollen.

Erwartet worden waren 1600 Studentinnen und Studenten aus 58 Ländern. Wegen der neu entdeckten Coronavirus-Variante Omikron verhängte die Schweiz verschiedene Einreise- und Quarantänebeschränkungen. Eine Durchführung des Anlasses sei damit nicht mehr möglich, teilten die Organisatoren mit.

Ursprünglich hätte die Winteruniversiade im Januar 2021 stattfinden sollen. Im August 2020 wurde der Anlass wegen der Corona-Pandemie abgesagt. Im November 2020 wurde der Dezember 2021 als neuer Termin festgesetzt.

Das Programm der Winteruniversiade hätte Wettkämpfe in zehn Sportarten umfasst: Biathlon und Ski-Orientierungslauf auf der Lenzerheide GR, Ski alpin auf dem Stoos SZ und in St. Moritz GR, Langlauf in Andermatt UR, Curling, Ski Freestyle und Snowboard in Engelberg OW, Eishockey in Zug und Sursee LU sowie Eiskunstlauf und Shorttrack in Luzern. Luzern wäre zudem die Host City des Anlasses gewesen.
