Winnipeg man shot by Red Deer RCMP days after he was reported missing in Calgary

Samuel Nicholas Klack was last seen around 7:45 a.m. on Thursday, March 9 at the Holiday Inn Express in the 2300 block of Banff Trail N.W. Klack is likely driving a blue 2012 Dodge Journey.

A Winnipeg man, who Calgary Police had asked for the public’s help in finding three days earlier, was shot last weekend by RCMP in Red Deer.

Having recently moved to Alberta from Winnipeg, 30-year-old Samuel Klack has been identified as the victim of the police shooting which occurred on Sunday.

Klack is believed to be in hospital although police have been tight-lipped on his injuries or his condition.

The province’s police watchdog, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called in to investigate the officer-involved shooting.

Further details on the incident were to be released by ASIRT earlier this week but as of Friday, no information had been released despite several calls to their office.

Klack was reported by Calgary police as missing after being last seen at the Holiday Inn Express in Calgary just before 8 a.m., on March 9.

“His family has not heard from him and say it is uncharacteristic of him to not be in contact. Family and police have been unable to find him,” Calgary Police posted on social media.

Last Saturday, Calgary Police issued a press release asking for the public’s help locating Klack.

On Sunday, police said they found Klack’s vehicle — a royal blue 2012 Dodge Journey with some damage to the front passenger wheel area and with a Manitoba License Plate — and had reason to believe he is in the Red Deer area.

That same day, around 11:30 a.m., RCMP responded to a complaint of a man firing a gun in a Walmart parking lot in Red Deer.

Hours later, officers found the man in Red Deer.

“During the arrest of this male, an interaction occurred where officers discharged their firearms,” the RCMP said in a media release. “As a result of the interaction, the male was taken to hospital with injuries.”

Following the shooting, Alberta RCMP immediately notified the Director of Law Enforcement and initiated their internal review process. “The Director of Law Enforcement deemed this to be “in scope” and has directed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to investigate,” RCMP said.

A Calgary police spokesperson cited privacy issues as the reason more information couldn’t be released.
