Winning KKB will be good start for PN to wrest Selangor, says Azmin
Azmin Ali says a PN victory in Kuala Kubu Baharu will not change the state government, but will boost the opposition’s plan of eventually toppling PH.
HULU SELANGOR: A Perikatan Nasional victory in the coming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election will be a good first step in wresting control of the Pakatan Harapan-led state government, PN leader Azmin Ali said.
“While a win in Kuala Kubu Baharu won’t lead to a change of the state government, it would be a great start in toppling PH,” Azmin, the Selangor PN chairman, said.
At the unveiling of the opposition coalition’s manifesto in Kuala Kubu Baharu this evening. the former Selangor menteri besar said a PN victory would also mean a stronger opposition in the state legislative assembly.
While PN failed to wrest Selangor from PH in the state election in August, it made major inroads, securing 22 seats, all in Malay-majority constituencies.
On the manifesto, Azmin said PN was not “promising the moon and the stars”.
“But we promise to do what we can for KKB,” he said, referring to the constituency’s acronym.
Asked to comment on PH’s manifesto, he said voters should not believe it as PH failed to fulfil their pledges from two years ago.
“Be it at the national and state levels, they failed to fulfil their promises, and it is unlikely that they can fulfil them in Kuala Kubu Baharu,” he said.
PN candidate Khairul Azhari Saut had earlier unveiled a five-point manifesto for the by-election, promising to defend minority groups and to preserve the natural environment, among others.
Khairul will be involved in a four-cornered fight with PH’s Pang Sock Tao, Parti Rakyat Malaysia’s Hafizah Zainuddin and independent candidate Nyau Ke Xin.
The seat fell vacant following the death of three-term DAP assemblyman Lee Kee Hiong on March 21 from cancer.
Polling falls on May 11, while early voting will be held tomorrow.
