Foggy conditions will continue in southern Ontario into Saturday, along with a few more messy systems amid a pretty big Friday warm-up.
DON’T MISS: Winter takes a breather in major Canadian cities with January thaw
From Thursday evening’s shot of heavier rain and the ongoing fog, to a possible wintry mix on Sunday to end the weekend. The warm-up Ontario is experiencing will come with a bit of a cost, and travel troubles.
Meanwhile, eastern sections of the province are dealing with prolonged periods freezing rain, and commuting nightmares, with another round coming to the region through Friday.
Thursday into Friday: Widespread fog advisories and another round of rain
Temperatures did not dip below freezing through the overnight hours on Wednesday, and will continue to be mild well into the weekend.
This mild and moist environment however, provides the perfect ingredients for another round of thick fog. Fog advisories were issued all across the south including Windsor, London, Hamilton, and up the Bruce peninsula Thursday morning, with reduced visibility for morning commuters. This will likely persist through Thursday, Friday and Saturday, too, so be sure to drive with caution and prepare for changeable weather and visibility conditions.
Another system will move in Thursday evening and overnight, pushing rain and mild air even farther north into cottage country.
The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) can expect showers throughout the event, totaling 10-20 mm, on top of the soggy conditions that hit late Wednesday. Heavier rain is targeted to the Lake Huron shores, with 20+ mm expected near Kincardine.
Expect daytime highs by Friday to tease spring-like values around 5-7°C.
There is still the risk of freezing rain for some areas in Algonquin Park over to the Quebec border, and in eastern Ontario, including Ottawa. This will cause slippery conditions once again on Friday morning.
Saturday overnight into Sunday: Fog finally breaks, but with a chance of snow
While it’s too early for specifics, the third system tracking south of the border may bring back seasonal temperatures and a risk for snowfall to close off the weekend.
There is also a chance however, that the storm’s track remains too far off the coast to have impacts. More seasonal temperatures are expected as the system pulls in colder air from the northwest by Monday, also helping to break the the fog cycle.
A couple days of colder weather are forecast early next week, especially for eastern Ontario, but much milder weather and early spring-like temperatures are forecast for the second half of next week, and continuing well into the first week of February, as well.
However, winter is not over. We are watching the potential for an extended stretch of colder winter weather from mid-February through early March.
