Domestic coal is mainly thin coal, not suitable for the metallurgical industry. Therefore, Hoa Phat imports coal from abroad, mostly Australia.

On April 14, The Harmony ship of Hoa Phat Shipping Joint Stock Company transported more than 80,000 tons of coal from Gladstone port (Australia) to Hoa Phat Dung Quat Iron and Steel Production Complex, Quang Ngai Province. This is the first voyage of The Harmony after being acquired by Hoa Phat Group (Code: HPG). Talking with the writer, the representative of Hoa Phat Dung Quat said that coal in Vietnam’s mines is mainly thin coal, not suitable for metallurgical needs. Therefore, Hoa Phat often imports fat coal from abroad, mainly Australia, and then refines it into coke to be used as raw materials for the blast furnace together with iron ore and limestone.
In 2020, Hoa Phat will import nearly 2 billion USD of machinery, equipment and production materials, of which the Australian market alone accounts for 35% – equivalent to 700 million USD. It is expected that by 2021, Hoa Phat will import from Australia 4 million tons of ore, 3.5 million tons of coal of all kinds, with a total estimated value of US $ 1.44 billion.

At the end of February 2021, Hoa Phat bought and received two large bulk carriers with a tonnage of 90,000 tons to transport coal and iron ore to Dung Quat Complex. Currently, Hoa Phat Dung Quat deep-water port is capable of receiving ships with a maximum tonnage of 200,000 tons. To make it easy to imagine, the Ever Given super container ship blocking the Suez Canal last March has a tonnage of 220,000 tons. Group of billionaire Tran Dinh Long said that the ability to receive large cargo ships helps reduce material costs by $ 3-5 / ton.
Each year, Hoa Phat imports tens of millions of tons of raw materials, so the savings are huge.
This deep-water port also makes it more convenient to transport finished products for consumption. Representative of Hoa Phat Dung Quat said that each week a large vessel docked at the port, in addition many smaller ships regularly enter and exit.
