Why did Tamil Nadu ban the use of liquid nitrogen in food?
If you use social media, you may have come across videos of smoking biscuits. One such video shows a boy wearing a green T-shirt who had no idea that trying this street snack would cost him his life. Normally, when people eat smoked biscuits, smoke comes out of their mouths. However, when this boy ate one filled with liquid nitrogen, he screamed in pain and collapsed. It was only after a thorough investigation that was revealed that his St. snack contained liquid nitrogen. After this incident, the Tamil Nadu government immediately banned the use of liquid nitrogen in food. But why is it so dangerous? Liquid nitrogen is nothing but frozen carbon dioxide. It is used as a coolant in food such as biscuits, ice creams and much more. The freezing agent is used at low temperatures between -190°C and -320 Fahrenheit to get a smooth texture and dramatic visuals. In simple words, anything liquid nitrogen touches it would freeze instantly. According to health exports, -196°C is far colder than the human body can tolerate. Consuming food laced with liquid nitrogen can cause gas, abdominal pain, mouth burn and skin allergies, just like this four year old boy whose lungs got expanded like a big ice cream. Next time you come across such a street snack, you know what to do. For more informative videos like this, keep watching India Today news mode.
