Why did Pierre Poilievre get kicked out of question period?
An unprecedented scene during Question Period in the House of Commons today. The Speaker ejected the Leader of the Opposition, Pierre Polyev, over his use of unparliamentary language. Here’s how it all unfolded. When will we put an end to this wacko policy by this wacko Prime Minister? No, no, I’m gonna ask the honourable Leader of the Opposition to withdraw that term, which is not considered parliamentary. Mr. Speaker, I replace wacko with extremist. He is an the honourable member to please. I’ll replace it with radical artist policy. I am not asking to replace. I’m asking the honourable Member to just simply withdraw. I order you to withdraw from the House from any participation by video conference to the remainder of this day sitting. The result was chaos. Now, we can’t show you everything that happened next because the House of Commons controls its own video feed. But eventually every single Conservative MP followed their leader and left the House. Our chief political correspondent, David Aiken, joins us now with the fallout. So, David, have you ever seen anything like that? Never. In fact, the Library of Parliament confirmed that is the first time in our history that a leader of the Official opposition has ever been thrown out. Now, before Pierre Polyev got tossed, things were already getting pretty heated. Terms like racist and spineless were getting thrown around, and another Conservative MP, in fact, had just been removed for calling the Speaker disgraceful. But it was the use of that adjective wacko that had Speaker Greg Fergus digging in his heels. Now Fergus is a Liberal MP and he’s been trying to police the language of parliamentarians before. He wants the House to be more civil, and it looks like he wanted to make a point here. But this Parliament has not been that notorious for bad behavior, certainly compared to other Parliaments in 2011. Justin Trudeau, he was then a backbencher. He called a Conservative cabinet minister a piece of and he did that in the House of Commons. In a Commons committee in 2006, Pierre Polyef told opponents to F you guys in the 90s, Alliance MP Darrell Stinson once crossed the floor. He threatened to punch a Liberal in the face after that Liberal had called him a racist. So we’re just calling someone a wacko rank. Well, thanks to Speaker Greg Fergus, it is now the reddest of red lines when it comes to prohibited parliamentary language. Jeff All right, so what’s next, David? Where does the House go from here? Well, after it all, today both the Liberals and New Democrats said that Pierre Poliev’s behavior was disgraceful and he ought to say sorry. He’s not going to say sorry. The Conservatives are not backing down. They’ve already doubled down, in fact, on the term wacko on social media. And in any event, Pauliev has been calling Trudeau A wacko and much worse for months now in stump speeches, in fundraisers. And what has it got him? While the Conservatives are on top of the polls and they’re raising $20 million a year now, against all that, it’s hard to see how the Speaker Greg Ferguson again, he’s a Liberal. Hard to see how he gets control of the House and gets M PS focus on the business of the nation, such as passing the 2024 budget. Jeff David Aiken in Ottawa. Thanks, David.
