Why climate extremists DON'T CARE if they bring Sydney to a grinding halt - even if it makes everyone furious: 'Of course this will irritate people'

Climate change activists took Sydney CBD by storm early on Monday morning  One woman flew from Queensland to support her son, who refuses to have kidsShe said creating chaos in the city is the only way to get the message acrossOne former retail worker said there needs to be immediate action for the planet Mali, 22, chained her head to her car with a bike lock and blocked traffic

Hardcore climate protesters realise peak-hour blockades will ‘irritate people’ – but they don’t care.

As far they as they’re concerned, commuter fury is the best way to make a stand against climate change.

Sydneysiders travelling into Sydney’s CBD from about 8am on Monday morning were greeted by the sound of helicopters blades and wailing sirens, as extreme protest group Blockade Australia took the city by storm.

Police patrolled the streets in hi-vis vests in a desperate attempt to stop 60-strong group from blocking access to the Sydney Harbour Tunnel – leaving workers trapped in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

A 22-year-old woman named Mali put a bicycle lock around her head and attached herself to the steering wheel of her white hatchback, while using the vehicle to block traffic from entering the tunnel.

She and ten others were arrested and taken to police stations around the city, where officers will allege they took part in an unauthorised protest.

The protest ended just before 9am when one demonstrator yelled ‘disperse!’ – and the group tore off in different directions.

Despite furious drivers honking their horns and screaming ‘you’re a bunch of losers’ at the group, 59-year-old Genevieve told Daily Mail Australia she thinks angering workers is an effective way to get her message across.

‘Of course this will irritate people but I can’t think of anything else except going into politics, which I’m not going to do because I don’t have the temperament for it,’ she said.

‘I feel like this is the best thing I can think of at the moment – if something else becomes available, I’ll do that.’

The Sunshine Coast local, who flew to Sydney to support her family during the protest, lamented the fact that she won’t have grandchildren because her son and daughter-in-law believe the world is too far gone.

‘My son is here today with his girlfriend and neither of them want to have kids because they feel it’s not fair on the child to bring it into the world in that state it’s in,’ she said.

‘It’s not because he doesn’t want to have them, it’s because of the situation – it’s not fair to have children, it’s really selfish, and I feel really stressed about it.’

The 25-year-old and his partner did not want to be interviewed, but – through his mother – said he has been severely depressed about lack of action on climate change.

‘He thinks the whole world’s had it and that it’s too late, so I’m seriously worried about his mental health,’ Genevieve added.

Another protester, Ian, held a sign at the rally that read ‘police overreaction to peaceful climate protesters’ – with a photo of cops in bulletproof vests.

When asked whether disrupting traffic was a good way to get bystanders to heed their message, the 76-year-old said immediate action is required.

Ian accused Scott Morrison’s former Liberal government of failing to acknowledge climate change for the nine years they lead the nation, before Anthony Albanese’s Labor government was elected in May.

‘I’m 76 – I haven’t got another nine years,’ he said.

‘How many bushfires, floods, and homeless people do we need?’

‘We need to take action to make sure that the people who got elected today take action.’

Ian said he saw three people being arrested after pushing bins and fencing over, and asked why police used such force.

‘The way they grabbed people and pushed them to the ground – you just thing ‘is that necessary?’

‘There are people shooting each other in the western suburbs, but if someone pushes a wheelie bin they’re thrown to the ground,’ he added, referencing a series of gangland shootings in the city’s west.

Moments earlier, Marli livestreamed the protest from her car.

‘I’m Marli, I’m 22. I’m [here] in protest of the climate destruction that is happening in this continent right now,’ she said.

‘There are some really angry people who are screaming and threatening me – banging on windows and doors.’

An outraged commuter could be seen during the video approaching her car and yelling at her through a window.

‘Guess what f** wit? You’re going to jail!’ he screamed.

‘They are going to love you in there!’

The group had made plans to ‘run or disperse’ through the city in a message sent out via an app on Sunday night, with leaders distributing legal advice to members ahead of the protest.

The environmental group also gave instructions for how activists can wreak havoc on traffic in the CBD.

‘This won’t be like a regular rally with speeches and a lot of time standing around – we will be meeting at 8am sharp and then moving quickly from there,’ the memo read.

‘Depending on police tactics you may be required to run or disperse depending on your abilities. Be prepared to walk on roads and stop cars from passing.’

Protesters were urged to keep their phone notifications turned off and ensure devices were password protected.

The advice also told demonstrators to only say ‘no comment’ if arrested and warned against wearing ‘contact lenses, makeup or oily sunscreen’ to reduce injury if pepper sprayed.

The event had been publicised over the group’s online channels for weeks, with participants offered workshops for ‘legal’, ‘street welfare’, and ‘medic’ training.

In marketing material for the June 27- July 2 rally, the group said they intend to converge’ on Sydney to ‘blockade the streets of Australia’s most important political and economic centre and cause disruption that cannot be ignored’.
