In a significant service outage on Friday night, a number of Apple users were locked out of their Apple ID accounts, requiring them to change their passwords for all of their devices and services. Social media user accounts indicate that the widespread outage started at approximately 8 p.m. ET. Users expressed dissatisfaction over suddenly losing access to their Apple IDs on Macs, iPhones, iPads, and other Apple products.

They faced an error message that prevented access when they tried to log in again using their current credentials.
zOne of the X users, Max Winebach wrote,”My Apple account got locked while I was in the middle of FaceTime, and I was signed out of all my Apple products.”
Users have to reset their Apple ID passwords through Apple’s account recovery procedure in order to get access back. Due to strong demand, several people did, however, report having trouble simply finishing the reset procedure at first.

Another user wrote, “Hey @AppleSupport all of my Apple products suddenly decided to lock me out of my Apple ID and asked me to re-verify my account. Except my password doesn’t work when I am 100% certain it is correct I get an error. What’s going on? I can’t even reset my password!”
iCloud services like FaceTime, iCloud Drive, iMessage, and the App Store were also impacted by the outage. For those affected, third-party apps and services that connect with Apple ID sign-in were also interfered with.
Apple has not offered an explanation for the service problems. Throughout the incident, there was no public acknowledgement on the company’s system status page of any issues with any of its services or systems.
Although major digital platforms have periodic authentication outages, this one seemed to be a widespread occurrence affecting a significant portion of Apple’s client base across several product lines and services. Such a large-scale lockout that happened at the same moment was last experienced in 2017.

The outage occurs while Apple is battling Active Theft problems, which have made it possible for malicious actors to get hold of Apple IDs and lock people out of their devices. It’s unclear, though, if Friday’s incidents had anything to do with those earlier assaults.
It’s unclear if an external attack or an internal system issue caused the problem. Any tech business should be concerned about widespread authentication system failures because of the security and privacy dangers associated with unauthorized account access during an incident.
Users affected by the outage voiced anger about their inability to use devices and cloud services that were essential to their digital life, as well as Apple’s lack of official communication regarding the problem. Apple did not answer a request for comment right away.
