Why are farmers angry?
Farmers are angry for lots of different reasons. In Wales, new rules to get government money, known as subsidies, have led to big protests because we’re getting desperate and we just really need the government to listen now. For many, it’ll mean dedicating 10% of their farms for trees and another 10% to natural habitat in order to get the cash they fear. Those rules could make farms financially unviable and lead to thousands of job losses. Farmers across the UK are also worried about cheap imports post Brexit. Which could undercut British produce. The question is, do we care? Go into any British supermarket and you’ll find chicken from Brazil, pork chops from Spain and so on. Consumers vote with their wallets and producing and buying British can cost more. If the number of imports grow, farmers warn they’ll continue to go out of business and that could put a risk to our food security.
