For the first time in the show’s history, female and male Islanders entered the TV villa at the same time and begin getting to know each other right away, forming those romantic relationships from the get-go.
In previous years, the girls were always first to strut into the villa, where they excitedly meet and open a bottle of bubbly before being joined by the boys, who typically enter one by one.
But in this year’s first twist, which marks the beginning of unexpected happenings on the show as bosses promise to keep the Islanders on their toes this summer, contestants have the chance to begin grafting from the moment they step foot in the villa.
A TV source told MailOnline earlier on Monday: ‘The girls have always entered the villa before the boys but for the first time, two females will enter followed by the first male Islander and already, sparks begin to fly.
‘The viewers have already chosen who is coupling up with who, so the Islanders getting to know each other before being put in their pairs only means that the drama will ensue quicker than usual.’
Ruchee and Jess were the first to walk into the villa and to their surprise are joined by Mitchel followed by Ella and then Andre.
Tonight’s launch episode will be the first time the 2023 summer cast meet after being kept in isolation for weeks ahead of their TV debut.
But two Islanders quickly discover that they have some history after model Ella revealed she knows semi-professional footballer Tyrique, who awkwardly struggled to recall their prior connection.

New format: Love Island viewers admitted they were loving the new twist which took place in the first episode of the new summer 2023 series on Monday night (pictured Molly and Mitchell)
Eventually, Tyrique realised that they previously met at a nightclub in London’s Mayfair, but Ella was wearing a blonde wig at the time, which is the reason why he had difficulty remembering her.
They are just two contestants from the lineup that the public have been given the chance to put together after Maya announced last week that ITV2 viewers had the power to matchmake this series.
Love Island viewers appeared to be they were loving the new twist which took place in the first episode of the new summer 2023 series – as they were impressed with the switch up.
The Islanders were notably confused by the change in format, as they expressed their bewilderment to each other during the opening minutes of the show.
Keen to clear things up, host Maya Jama soon arrived to let the new cast know what was going to happen.
Five Islanders, including Ella, Ruchee, Andre Mitchel and Jess arrived on the show, only to be joined by five more contestants who they would be coupling up with.
Maya told them: ‘We’ve switched it up by letting you meet now. Anyone been flirting already? You been having a flirt? With who?’
Ella revealed that her type was ‘tall with nice teeth’, while Ruchee admitted she was looking out for ‘height, fashion sense and someone that I can bring to my family.’

Mitchell confessed he was looking for the real deal and has plans to ‘settle down, find wifey, kids and dogs etc.’
Jess controversially revealed: ‘My type is pretty boys with Turkey teeth.’ Maya admitted: ‘I’ve never heard someone say they want Turkey teeth.’
Sharing the news that they would be soon meeting their couples, Maya said: ‘I’ve got some news, none of you guys will be coupling up with each other. That decision has already been made by the public.
‘Are you ready to find out who the public have coupled you up with? Let’s go!’
Viewers rejoiced at the the change in format, admitting they hoped that producers continue to switch it up throughout the series.
