Which train will pass for Van Bommel after two painful dismissals?

VideoHis second job as head coach also ended in dismissal for Mark van Bommel (44). Just like with PSV, he stepped up again with Champions League participant Wolfsburg, but he turned out not to be a crisis manager at both clubs.

By Maarten Wijffels

For the second time in two years, Mark van Bommel involuntarily said goodbye to a group of players on a Monday morning. In December 2019, at PSV, he held a kind of spontaneous discussion of the last game against Feyenoord in the dressing room. Yesterday at his dismissal in Wolfsburg no more.

In Eindhoven, twelve duels with only two victories formally sealed his fate as head coach. ,,With Wolfsburg we are now on four victories in thirteen official matches. We never saw the tide turn with Van Bommel,” said Jörg Schmadtke, technical director.

How valuable it is that I once, in 2000, made the choice to start at the bottom of the ladder as a trainer/coach.

Peter Bosz

Schmadtke explained yesterday about the fastest dismissal of a coach in club history. The most important thing the driver said, he described only cryptically: at Wolfsburg they did not see a trainer with the skills, the character, nor the experience to also be a manager in a crisis.

,,Van Bommel certainly has an idea about the football he wants to play”, said Schmadtke. ,,But for reasons that do not have to be made public, he has not been able to bring that in. Of course we also had a preparation with only one practice game won. Saturday we saw a team in which doubt reigns again. It is a pity that it is this way and it is also a bitter defeat for myself, because I made a mistake with this appointment.”

Former top football players

It has now been more than five years since Van Bommel officially became a trainer. In February 2016, at the same time as Ruud van Nistelrooy, he received his professional football coach diploma on the KNVB campus in Zeist. Both former top football players, almost the same age, had followed a so-called ‘tailor-made course’, created by the association for former internationals with great merits.

Five years later, Van Nistelrooy (45) is still a student. In mini-steps, he seeks his way up in what he calls ‘a complex and demanding profession’. At the moment he is also gaining impressions and experience at Jong PSV, in the depths of the first division. And self-knowledge. He also wants to see how he deals with setbacks. At the beginning of this season, he did not shake hands with a referee after a game out of anger. “Not good of course. I also learn from it”, he said later about an incident that the Netherlands now received nothing from.

Five years after his graduation, Van Bommel (44) has already been head coach in the Eredivisie, in the Bundesliga and has been in the spotlights of the Champions League. But after two painful layoffs, the question is which train will come for him.

It is not to compare Van Nistelrooy and Van Bommel. Perhaps one is extremely slow, patient and averse to overestimating himself when building a second career. The other, in any case, was not unusually quick at shaping his.

Like other former top players, Van Bommel quickly thought ‘big’. Immediately head coach at the club from PSV under 19. A German Champions League participant as a second job. Then the risk of failure is also high. Because: what relevant experience as a manager does he actually bring with him? How much baggage when directing people, especially if there are a few times that you don’t win?

Peter Bosz recently talked about his route. He is now 57 and still regularly thinks: ,,How valuable it is that I once, in 2000, made the choice to start at the bottom of the ladder as a trainer/coach.”

After graduating, Bosz wanted to ‘first fully understand the profession and myself’. Starting as a ‘trainer’ with the amateurs of AGOVV, where you had to arrange and set up everything yourself. Later relegated with De Graafschap. Also achieved success, general amateur champion with AGOVV, with Heracles champion first division and cup finalist. His first coaching experience in the Champions League came in 2016. He was 52 years old at the time.

Is Erik ten Hag’s path so much different? New. He started almost 20 years ago in training at FC Twente, was an assistant at PSV, worked in the first division at Go Ahead Eagles, abroad with the second team of Bayern Munich, coached in the sub-top of the Eredivisie FC Utrecht and made his debut. also only around his 50th as head coach at a top club in the Champions League.

Of course: Bosz, Ten Hag and in their wake also trainers such as Slot, Fraser, Van Wonderen and Grim never reached the highest level as a football player. Their own limitations make it easier for them to relate to the limitations of players and circumstances now that they are trainers. It is not surprising that something like this is more difficult for De Boer, Seedorf, Van Basten, Gullit, Rijkaard, Cocu, Stam, Van Bommel or Van Bronckhorst. And sometimes Barcelona really suits someone better than Sparta, as Rijkaard proved.

But it is also the choice for stops on the route. In the distant past, some of the very best Dutch trainer/coaches even filled their backpacks in a professional life outside of football. Louis van Gaal and Guus Hiddink used to be gym teachers. It is hard to imagine, but for twelve years Hiddink stood in front of classes with not the easiest students, he said in 2016 in front of a room with students from the Fontys Sports College. ,,That helped me a lot later in my coaching career. I still feel like a sports teacher.”
