Some Toyota Camry cars are affected by this week’s recall
Toyota has recalled nearly 300,000 vehicles that might “inadvertently creep forward” when placed in neutral. The announcement was one of three safety recalls announced by the company this week.
The largest affects Toyota’s Tundra, Sequoia and Lexus LX 600 models. Approximately 280,000 trucks and SUVs have been recalled as certain parts of the transmission “may not immediately disengage” when shifted to the neutral position, the company said.
“This can allow some engine power to continue to be transferred to the wheels and can allow the vehicle to inadvertently creep forward at a low speed when it is on a flat surface and no brakes are applied, leading to an increased risk of a crash.”
Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by late April and Toyota and Lexus dealers will update the software at no cost.
Another 19,000 vehicles, meanwhile, have been recalled over a software issue which has led to rearview images not displaying within the period of time required by certain US safety regulations. This can lead to an increased risk of crashing when reversing, Toyota said. Customers will also be notified by April if their vehicle is involved in this recall.
The final alert is for around 4,000 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid cars built in 2023 to 2024. Toyota said: “The two head restraints on the 60 percent portion of the rear fold down seats in the involved vehicles may have poor welds on a bracket that can cause the vehicles not to comply with a federal safety standard.
“This can affect head restraint performance and increase the risk of injury during certain collisions.” Toyota dealers will replace the rear seat back frame for free for these customers, who will again be notified by late April.
