Where was Crossfire filmed? Tenerife filming locations of BBC drama series, is the San Blas hotel a real place

Crossfire stars Bodyguard and actress Keeley Hawes as a woman whose life is turned upside down when a gunman attacks the resort she is staying at on a family holiday.

The series was filmed on location last year and is set in a gorgeous resort on a small tropical island. The beautiful setting contrasts with the violent action and tense drama of the series, which aired on BBC One last month.

    Where was Crossfire filmed?

The series was shot on location at the Spanish Canary Island of Tenerife, off the coast of north west Africa in the Atlantic ocean. Crossfire follows a family who go on a luxury vacation when a shooting takes place at their resort, creating pandemonium and sending their lives into turmoil.

The main setting of the series is the luxury resort where the family is staying for their holiday. The real hotel where filming took place is the San Blas resort, which has been renamed Barceló, on the southern tip of Tenerife.

Many of the cast were staying in the same hotel where filming took place – Hawes said: “My bedroom was actually Jo’s room, so it was highly unusual, I don’t think I’ve ever experienced that before.

“It’s not something I’d recommend. There’s an element of stir crazy that goes on but luckily everybody got on really well.”

Barceló Tenerife is a luxury hotel with a pool, three restaurants and regular bars, two poolside bars, a gym, and a coffee shop. You can stay at the hotel – if the dramatic scenes from Crossfire haven’t put you off – and one week’s stay in August next year could set you back just over £1,200 for two people.

The shooting featured in the series is not based on a specific incident in the past, though there have been shootings at several holiday resorts.

Doughty explained that the series was inspired by a family holiday she had in Tenerife – she said: “I was lying on a sun lounger one day in a hotel complex; my family were scattered around the complex. I had one child was in the pool and one had wandered off somewhere and I couldn’t help thinking what if some sort of gun attack happened on the resort at this particular moment.”

    Where is Crossfire set?

The three part miniseries is set in an unnamed small tropical island, likely off the coast of Africa. The majority of the series is set at a luxurious resort on the island where the main cast of characters are staying on a vacation that turns into a nightmare.

The series is not actually set in Tenerife, as executive producer Louise Doughty explained that Tenerife is too large and has armed police that would arrive on the scene quickly. For the purposes of the plot, the location had to be a much smaller island where an armed response would take much longer.

To transform the setting into a smaller island, many of the hotels which make up the Tenerife skyline had to be edited out.

    How can I watch Crossfire?
