Where is former Springbok World Cup winner Butch James?

Butch James, born Andrew David James, was a force to be reckoned with in South African rugby in more ways than one.

It’s not often that opposition teams would fear a flyhalf, but James largely changed that perception. Fearless, physical and renowned for his aggressive tackling, he was truly a one-of-a-kind Springbok.

Nicknamed “Butch” by his grandmother for his boisterous personality, he certainly lived up to the name as a player, while he was also well-known as one of the most humorous and fun-loving team members away from the field.

James began his professional career with the Sharks in 2000, where he quickly became a fan favourite. He ultimately racked up over 100 appearances and 800 points for the Sharks across all competitions, but was also troubled by knee injuries.

The physical flyhalf made his Springbok debut in 2001, and although he would feature in three Tests the year after, injuries and struggles to rediscover his best form then kept him out of the national picture until 2006.

In just his second Test, it should also be noted that he slotted five penalties to steer the Springboks to a 20-15 win over Les Bleus. However, he was suspended after the game for a late, dangerous hit on French wing David Bory. Such incidents would characterise his’ early career and earned him an unwanted reputation as an ill-disciplined defender that was often punished by referees.

Yet from 2006, under the direction of coach Jake White, he was given full backing, and a highlight of his career was playing a key role as part of the victorious 2007 Rugby World Cup Springbok team.

Butch played in a further nine Tests the following year and also featured in the record 53-8 drubbing of Australia in the Tri-Nations clash in Johannesburg on 30 August 2008. He would feature in just seven more Springbok games after that, though, ultimately ending his career with 42 Test caps.

James’ career was a mix of dazzling performances and injury struggles. He ventured abroad to play for Bath in England before returning to South Africa to play for the Golden Lions and eventually rejoined the Sharks.

He retired in 2013, bringing an end to a career filled with triumphs, tribulations and plenty of entertainment.

What has former Springbok Butch James been up to since retiring?

After hanging up his boots, James seamlessly transitioned into coaching, joining the Varsity Shield side UKZN Impi as a backline and kicking coach.

However, the move into coaching never materialised into something permanent. Towards the end of his rugby career he also did some work as a managing director at local advertising company

In recent times he has become more well known as a SuperSport pundit and commentator, while he served as a sales director for a property development company.

James is a passionate amateur mountain biking, and is a regular participant at the Cape Epic. He also serves as an ambassador for proudly South African VSOP Avante Potsill Brandy, which was recently launched.

Family life

The former Springbok Butch James is married to wife Julia. They have three children together.

“Most of my adult life has been spent on a rugby field, I met some wonderful people along the way and created memories that will last forever,” his profile reads as a property practitioner.

“The highlight for me was winning the 2007 Rugby World Cup in Paris, to have my family and friends there made it extra special. Since then my wife Julia and I have added 3 more James boys to our team. Juggling 3 kids and work can certainly keep you on your toes, so on the odd day that life isn’t too busy I love to find a game of golf with friends.”
