Whatever it is you’re doing, do it with excellence, says chair of Hang Lung Properties
The company motto we do it well, what does it mean for you, Adriel? To me actually it sort of informed and was informed by our values, our values. Integrity is really the base, but I also include openness, sustainability and excellence. These you hear sustainability and you hear integrity a lot. You don’t hear openness and excellence quite as much. And excellence, I really wanted to be in there because that implies that whatever it is you’re doing, it could be photocopying, it could be, you know, writing a report or it could be negotiating or it could be designing them all or it could be servicing the customer. You have to do with the sense of excellence and the mind to produce and to offer something of excellence. And so to do it well implies excellence. That’s really to me what doing it well means. Ronnie, did you come up with that motto? We do it well, that one I did, but the content of which is more a drills. You like the decoration here. You have been here many times and this is the we just finished this two weeks ago. I hope you’ll like it because that conveys excellence. It is not necessarily expensive, but it is excellent. And so, you know, a lot of people keep the offices very, very minimal and very, very cheap. Do you think that such a company can really produce really, really good products, especially when the luxury mall business and luxury commercial property offices and so forth? So I suppose the key is to do things excellent, but not necessarily lavish. That is an art. It it. And I remember 30-40 years ago I went to my friend’s home in Hong Kong, who are all very wealthy. The home all looked like the French Palace, and to them that’s luxury, right? To me that may be luxury. I don’t think so because it’s uncomfortable and and and and to me is not necessarily excellent, you know, Of course, style as a matter of is personal. You can. Whichever way you like it. It’s fine with me, but whatever it is excellent. You’re an active philanthropist. Why is it so important to be giving back? Well, first of all, my family never believed in inherited wealth. So if you don’t give it to your children, what do you give it to? The money you made it from society. Why not give it back to society? Right. And so I think that that is the best model I can find. The best model is not high taxation. If necessary, you force the government to have high taxation. But if you ever really get back to society, theoretically you don’t have to have that high a taxation. So you know, we are doing our part. We don’t need the world to know. We just quietly hopefully do the right thing. Adriel, you’re active in community investment initiatives. What achievements have you experienced first hand that have impacted you? We talked earlier about the partnership at the corporate level. For the time being, I’m really focusing on the corporate sustainability and investment side. I think that what really resonates with me is using one’s business and leveraging the plethora of stakeholders to really give back to society. What our model is, is to have a top quality shopping center and lifestyle center in the center of town. So what we touch is the urban community and I think there’s a lot that can be done around the urban community in giving back and in make an impact there.
