What is the coldest day ever in New York history?

(NEXSTAR) — Spring can’t come soon enough. Despite temperatures beginning to rise lately in the New York area, we’re still some time away from it being 60 degrees and sunny. On the bright side though, it could absolutely be worse.

February has historically been one of the coldest month of the year in the state of New York, according to the National Weather Service. The coldest month in the history of New York City was in February of 1934 with an average temperature of 19.9 degrees Fahrenheit. This lines up with the coldest day in New York City history on February 9, 1934, when it was -15 degrees Fahrenheit.

New York City’s coldest temperature ever recorded was in 1934

Believe it or not, though, that day doesn’t hold a candle to the state record. To experience that kind of cold you’d have to travel north through upstate New York and find Old Forge. Located in Herkimer County, Old Forge is the “Adirondack Base Camp,” a tourist destination with plenty of museums, restaurants, and attractions for visitors.

But back on February 17, 1976, it was probably the last place you wanted to be when temperatures dropped to a state record low of -52 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information.

For reference, the average temperature of the South Pole is -56 degrees Fahrenheit.

The National Weather Service shows that the coldest days recorded in New York City have consistently been in February and December.
