UAAP: La Salle could lose another key player with Jyne Soreño injured

MANILA, Philippines — The De La Salle Lady Spikers are holding their breath after Jyne Soreño suffered a left shoulder injury in the first set of their four-set win over the Adamson Lady Falcons in the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Soreño hurt her left shoulder after a collision with libero Lyka De Leon in a wild ball chase with Adamson leading the first set, 19-17, as the Lady Falcons drew first blood with 10 straight points.

She returned to the locker room and came out wearing a sling in the fourth set byt La Salle, which continued to miss reigning MVP Angel Canino, still pulled off a 17-25, 25-19, 25-11, 25-22 victory to force a three-way tie at 10-2 with idle National University and University of Santo Tomas.

La Salle deputy coach Noel Orcullo said the team is still assessing Soreño’s shoulder injury.

“Right now, we’re checking if she has dislocated her shoulder because she’s wearing an arm slim. I haven’t received any final diagnosis yet,” said Orcullo.

Orcullo was pleased with how the Lady Spikers played with a sense of urgency after suddenly losing Soreño and playing a fourth straight game without Canino, whose recovery from a right forearm cut remains day to day.

“We always tell them to play with whatever we have. Let’s not look for those who are not there. Whoever is in the line-up should step up,” Orcullo said. “We need whatever any player can give us.”

Shevana Laput carried the cudgels of the Lady Spikers with 24 points. Alleiah Malaluan and Maicah Larroza had eight and five points, respectively.

La Salle bounced back from a four-set loss to NU, which ended the former’s seven-game winning streak last Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.
