what happens when you wear contact lenses for long hours?

Contact lenses are like tiny, clear glasses that you wear directly on your eyes. They help people see better if they have trouble with their vision. If the person can’t see things up close (near-sighted) or far away (far-sighted), they can use contact lenses for the same. These lenses are made of a soft, flexible material and come in different shapes and sizes to fit comfortably on your eye. You put them in and take them out easily, but you have to be careful to keep them clean to avoid getting an eye infection. A lot of people also use contact lenses for aesthetic reasons if needed.

Contact lenses work by bending the light that enters your eye so that it focuses correctly on your retina, which is at the back of your eye. They are a popular alternative to glasses for many people who want clear vision without wearing bulky eyewear.

While it might seem comfortable, contact lenses too have their own drawback. Wearing them for long hours or sleeping with them can do more damage than good. Here, take a look at what happens to your eyes when you wear contact lenses for long hours.

Eye Dryness

Contact lenses can absorb moisture from your eyes, leading to dryness and discomfort. When you wear them for too long, they may draw out more moisture than usual, making your eyes feel dry, gritty or even itchy.

Reduced Oxygen Flow

Your eyes need oxygen to stay healthy and contact lenses can limit the amount of oxygen that reaches them, especially when worn for extended periods. This reduction in oxygen flow can cause your eyes to feel tired, red and strained.

Increased Risk of Infections

Wearing contact lenses for too long increases the risk of eye infections. Bacteria and fungi can build upon the surface of the lenses, especially if they’re not cleaned properly or if you wear them overnight. This can lead to infections like conjunctivitis (pink eye) or keratitis, which can cause pain, redness and vision problems.

Corneal Abrasions

Prolonged wear of contact lenses can sometimes cause tiny scratches on the surface of your cornea, the clear outer layer of your eye. These scratches, known as corneal abrasions, can be painful and make your eyes sensitive to light. They can also increase the risk of infection.

Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis (GPC)

GPC is an inflammation of the inner surface of the eyelids, often caused by wearing contact lenses for too long. It can lead to symptoms like itching, redness and the sensation of having a foreign object in your eye. GPC can be uncomfortable and may require you to stop wearing your lenses temporarily.

To prevent such complications, it is important that you follow some guidelines. Always follow the recommended wearing schedule provided by your eye care professional. Take your lenses out before sleeping, as sleeping with them can significantly increase the risk of complications. Clean and disinfect your lenses regularly to remove any buildup of bacteria or debris. If you experience any discomfort or notice any changes in your vision, remove your lenses immediately and consult your eye doctor.
