Several types of amyloidosis can affect the heart but 2 types account for the large majority of cases: transthyretin amyloidosis and light chain amyloidosis. Transthyretin is a protein made in the liver that carries thyroid hormone and vitamin A throughout the body. Light chains are normally part of the structure of antibodies. When these proteins are present in excessive amounts or do not function normally, they can accumulate in heart tissue, impairing the heart’s ability to pump and causing the condition called cardiac amyloidosis.

Senile systemic amyloidosis, wild-type amyloidosis, affects the heart. Its target organ is the heart, and it affects men over 70 years of age.

There are mainly two forms of amyloidosis that can affect the heart: light chain amyloidosis (AL) and transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR).

Cardiac amyloidosis (stiff heart syndrome) occurs when amyloid deposits take the place of normal heart muscle. It is the most typical type of restrictive cardiomyopathy. Cardiac amyloidosis may affect the way electrical signals move through the heart.
