If you say it, it will come. That’s the hope of women who are increasingly vocal about their salaries. By sharing the amount, they’re seeking to remedy a pernicious bias: On average, a woman working full-time, year-round earns 84 cents to every dollar paid to a man in the United States. If you include part-time workers, that number drops to 77 cents. For women of some racial and ethnic groups, the pay gap is even wider. If these numbers are familiar, it’s because they have remained essentially static for the past two decades. Whether transparency can become the David defeating the Goliath of entrenched discrimination is the subject of much debate.
