A furious Harry Maguire was booked in the aftermath of Manchester United’s record-breaking 4-3 defeat to Chelsea.
Hat-trick hero Cole Palmer scored a 102nd-minute winner, the latest in Premier League history, to earn all three points for Chelsea, who led 2-0 before finding themselves 3-2 down going into added time. After the final whistle blew on one of the most enthralling games in recent memory, Maguire remonstrated with referee Jarred Gilett inside the centre circle but was met with a yellow card.
It’s unclear what the England international was complaining about, as United’s players weren’t happy with the penalty awarded for Chelsea’s third goal and the fact that the game had gone beyond the eight additional minutes given by the fourth official. Maguire played every minute of the seven-goal thriller which was kicked off by an early strike from Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.
United winger Antony gave away a penalty for Chelsea’s second in the 19th minute, as Palmer slotted past Andre Onana for his first of three goals. United responded before half-time, though, with Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes levelling the scores.
Garnacho scored again in the 67th minute to complete the comeback for Erik ten Hag’s side, but the script was still being written as Chelsea pushed for an equaliser late on. They finally broke United’s resolve the 100th minute when Diogo Dalot gave away a penalty, allowing Palmer to convert again after a long VAR check.
Just 82 seconds later, man of the match and boyhood United fan Palmer found himself in an astonishing amount of space at a corner, receiving the ball and firing a shot on goal which deflected in off Scott McTominay, sending Stamford Bridge wild. It was then when the curtain finally came down on a dramatic night, with Maguire and his team-mates left devastated.

Speaking to TNT Sports post-match, Ten Hag bemoaned: “You cannot give it away like we did and we have to manage this game better. It is a team performance, you can point to one of the players but it is about team performance.
“When it gets chaotic you have to deal with it as a team and we made the wrong decisions and we didn’t help out as a team. Out of possession we made bad decisions. Also, I think lucky at the end with the penalty situation, questionable and very soft but we have to do better.”
