Idaho sending foster children thousands of miles from home for treatment
A CBS2 Investigation into Idaho’s Foster Care System finds the state is sending children to 18 different states for treatment. As you can see on the map below, some children are going to treatment facilities as far away as Florida, Georgia, and Virginia.
When CBS2 first began asking questions about Idaho foster children leaving Idaho for treatment, they were going to nine states. We reached out to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare for an explanation. We’ll provide that information when we receive it.
This comes at a time when the state is seeing a drop in the number of children in foster care. 1,130 children were in foster care during the state fiscal year of 2023. That’s down from over 1,300 in 2021.
