Western Australia slams border shut to Victoria again after Covid-19 outbreak grows

Western Australia is slamming its border shut to Victoria again after an outbreak of Covid-19 in the eastern state.

Victoria’s coronavirus numbers have climbed to 24, prompting the West Australian government to reclassify the state as “medium risk” and reintroduce the hard border from 12.01am on Saturday.

Travel from Victoria will no longer be permitted unless you are an exempt traveller.

The restriction also applies to anyone who may have been in Victoria since July 8 and has not completed 14 days of quarantine in a lower risk jurisdiction.

NSW and Queensland are already cut off from Western Australia too.

Exemptions include certain senior government officials and military personnel, members of the Commonwealth parliament, a person carrying out functions under a law of the Commonwealth, and a person carrying out a limited range of specialist functions.

West Australians who travelled to Victoria recently and need to return home can also apply for an exemption.

Exempt travellers must self-quarantine for 14 days, present for a Covid-19 test within 48 hours, get tested if symptoms develop, and be tested on day 11 after arriving.

Acting Premier Stephen Dawson said in a statement that the escalating situation on the east coast was very concerning.

“Our thoughts are with NSW and Victoria as they try to bring the growing Delta outbreak under control,” he said.

“WA’s hard border is vital to protect Western Australians from the spread of Covid-19 from other jurisdictions.

“I urge all Western Australians currently in Victoria to return home as quickly as possible.”

Police Commissioner Chris Dawson told reporters that travellers in Victoria should return to Western Australia “without delay”.

He said authorities would work with people trying to return from Victoria “as compassionately and reasonably as possible”.

But he warned anyone who delayed their return for a holiday or other non-essential reason might find it harder to re-enter the state.

“The overwhelming concern which underscores all of this decision making is the health of the West Australian community,” the police commissioner said.

Tasmania and South Australia previously announced they were shutting Victorian travellers out.

Returning South Australians can return under level three restrictions, unless they have been in Greater Melbourne, Geelong or Bacchus Marsh.

After their arrival, they must get Covid-19 tests on days one, five and 13, and must self-quarantine until the first negative result is received.

People returning from Greater Melbourne, Geelong or Bacchus Marsh must quarantine for 14 days and get tested on days one, five and 13.

Anyone who has been in Victoria since July 8 will not be allowed to enter Tasmania unless approved as an essential traveller.

The ACT is also introducing stay at home measures for anyone who enters the territory from Victoria.

New Zealand also previously announced it would halt the Trans Tasman bubble with Victoria until at least Monday.

Victoria recorded six new cases overnight during the first day of its snap lockdown.
