The police in the Free State arrested two suspects in connection with the robbery of the Wesselsbron post office on Friday, 4 February.
WESSELSBRON POST OFFICE SUSPECTS ARRESTED
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in the province, Captain Stephen Thakeng, said a manhunt was launched after three armed suspects held up the Wesselsbron post office on Thursday, 3 February.
As previously reported, the suspects wore police masks and forced the manager and two employees into a backroom before tying them up. The manager was forced to open the safe at gunpoint and the suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
They were seen leaving the scene in a white Toyota Camry with a Botswana license plate.
“A look-out was given for the vehicle used by the suspects and within a period of 72 hours of the activation plan, two suspects were traced and arrested.
“The team worked around the clock and the vehicle that matched the description was spotted in Welkom CBD and stopped by members of Welkom Flying Squad,” said Thakeng in a statement on Friday.
A 32-year-old suspect – who was driving the Camry – was arrested, along with a 37-year-old man. They were charged with business robbery and the vehicle and a Samsung Galaxy tablet were seized.
The arrested suspects are expected to appear before the Wesselsbron Magistrate Court imminently.
Free State police commissioner Lieutenant-General Baile Motswenyane applauded the swift arrest.
The investigation continues.
