Few snacks take us back to our youth quite like honey buns—glazed yeast pastries laced with cinnamon and honey that sing when warmed.

This nostalgic treat was actually developed back in the 1950s in Greensboro, North Carolina, by the brother of Winston-Salem restaurant owner Louis Griffin. Fast-forward a few years, states, and family members, and the Griffins opened a flagship factory to produce pastries in London, Kentucky. In 1983, their company was purchased by Flowers Foods, which now produces around 10 million honey buns each week under the Tastykake label. (There’s even a designated Honey Bun Day in October—learn more from London’s local paper, the Sentinel Echo.)

Decades after their invention, honey buns still hold a special place in the hearts of Southerners, even showing up on local menus grilled and topped with ice cream or subbing in for the bun on a bacon cheeseburger. We’ll even make them from scratch and stuff ‘em with sausage.

One of our favorite producers of the packaged pastries is Hostess, whose Jumbo HoneyBun stands alongside beloved snack cake classics like Twinkies, DingDongs, and Raspberry Zingers.

The snack food giant just announced that they’ll be releasing an iconic mashup in early March—one that is sure to fly off grocery shelves and find its way into the backseat on every long weekend road trip. Meet HoneyBun Donettes: soft, bite-size Donettes made with the warm cinnamon and sweet vanilla glaze flavor of HoneyBuns.

“We know that snack lovers are increasingly seeking new flavor combinations, and the melding of distinct tastes and textures offers a unique snacking experience,” said Chris Balach, VP of Marketing, Sweet Baked Snacks at The J.M. Smucker Co. “The Hostess brand continues to lead in delivering mouthwatering innovations like HoneyBun Donettes that satisfy consumers’ cravings and bring joy not only to their breakfast routine, but throughout their day.”

HoneyBun Donettes will be available in a single-serve package and by the bag (if you’re willing to share) at stores nationwide. An added perk: This sweet snack is made without high-fructose corn syrup, artificial flavorings, or artificial colors.

While you’re waiting for HoneyBun Donettes to drop, try your hand at our cinnamon-swirled Honey Bun Cake. It may be less portable than its bite-size cousin, but it’ll surely knock the socks off of any houseguest you’re hosting. How about serving up a slice of nostalgia for breakfast?
