'We can victim shame on the record': Texts reveal female Facebook exec advised Andrew Cuomo's team to leak accuser Lindsey Boylan's personal file and said 'I'm nervous about FB knowing I've been working on this'

Text messages reveal that a female Facebook executive who once worked for Andrew Cuomo advised his team to leak the personal file of one of his accusers and that she was nervous about Facebook finding out about her involvement.

New documents released by New York attorney general Letitia James include texts from Facebook communications manager Dani Lever who advised the former governor’s team to victim shame accuser Lindsay Boylan.

Lever sent a message to Cuomo’s staff, including top aide ‘mean girl’ Melissa DeRosa, on December 13 last year saying ‘I think we can victim shame on the record’.

It was in response to tweets sent by Lindsay Boylan accusing the governor of sexual harassment.

Shortly afterwards Cuomo’s staff attempted to smear her by releasing her personal files

Messages reveal that Lever, Cuomo’s former press secretary, was afraid that her new bosses at the social media company would discover her involvement in advising the governor.

When asked about Lever advising the Cuomo team, Meta spokesman Andy Stone told DailyMail.com ‘no comment.’

‘Like I’m nervous about FB knowing I’ve been working on this etc etc.,’ Lever wrote in March.

In response, Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi reassured Lever that he removed her name from an upcoming article to which she sent an appreciative text that read: ‘Rich I could kiss you but it seems like bad form this week,’ referencing the allegations mounting against the governor.

Messages reveal that Lever played a key part in advising Cuomo aides on how to smear Lindsey Boylan, a former aide who was the first woman to accuse Cuomo of sexual harassment in a series of tweets and then more in-depth in a Medium post.

Boylan claimed that the governor asked her to play strip poker and kissed her on the lips without her permission when she worked for him in 2017.

‘I think we can victim shame on the record,’ Lever wrote in a December 13 message to Azzopardi and ‘mean girl’ Melissa DeRosa, Cuomo’s former top aide, presumably right after Boylan’s tweet that same day.

According to text, Lever compared the ‘victim shaming’ strategy to how President Biden dealt with sexual misconduct allegations from Tara Reade during the 2020 campaign.

‘This was part of Biden’s response by the way,’ Lever wrote. ‘Biden camp said ‘this absolutely did not happen’ then gave statement.’

Days later Lever texted Linda Lacewell, ‘I still don’t know why we are talking to Gov lol. But I’m here for the ride.’

Lever went as far as confronting former Cuomo staffer Andrew Ball for liking a tweet from Charlotte Bennett, who came forward with her own accusations against the governor shortly after Boylan.

‘You liked Charlotte’s tweet? Call me,’ Lever texted Ball in February. ‘Was that on purpose?? Can you unlike it.’

Ball replied to Lever ‘done’ indicating he un-liked the tweet to which Lever responded with a heart emoji.

Ball would later tell investigator he un-liked the tweet to maintain a positive relationship with the governor and his team.

In addition to the damning text, James also released a 449 page transcript of a June deposition in which investigators questioned Lever about her work with Cuomo and why she kept it from her employers at Facebook, the New York Post reported.

‘It’s something that I was doing on my personal time, and I would have preferred Facebook not to know about it,’ Lever told investigators.

But according to Lever, she was given permission from a supervisor to put her name on a February letter disputing Boylan’s claim that Cuomo asked to play strip poker on a jet in 2017.

‘I asked for permission,’ Lever said. ‘She was okay with it.’

According to ethics experts Lever helping Cuomo through a PR crisis while working in communications constitutes as an illegal gift.

‘Using your professional services and providing them to a public official for free of charge is a gift,’ David Grandeau, the former top ethics watchdog in New York state, told the Post in September. ‘It’s a misdemeanor for her and it’s a misdemeanor for Facebook. It is a clear violation.’

On Wednesday Andrew’s brother Chris Cuomo said he was ’embarrassed’ following his suspension from CNN after it was revealed he provided greater assistance to his brother Andrew over sexual harassment allegations than he previously admitted.

He was suspended after New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office released text messages that showed Cuomo helped strategize brother Andrew Cuomo’s response to the sexual harassment scandal earlier this year.

Cuomo has accused James of conducting a ‘political’ investigation and  maintains that James only completed the report and made such a damning assessment of him because she wants his job. She recently announced plans to run for Governor next year.

The network on Tuesday evening said that Cuomo, 51, was suspended indefinitely, with Anderson Cooper extending his hour-long show to two hours, to cover Chris’s 9pm slot.

The network’s statement said: ‘The New York attorney general’s office released transcripts and exhibits Monday that shed new light on Chris Cuomo’s involvement in his brother’s defense,’ CNN said on Tuesday.

‘The documents, which we were not privy to before their release, raise serious questions.

‘When Chris admitted to us that he had offered advice to his brother’s staff, he broke our rules and we acknowledged that publicly.

‘But we also appreciated the unique position he was in and understood his need to put family first, and job second.

‘However these documents point to a greater level of involvement in his brother’s efforts than we previously knew.

‘As a result we have suspended Chris indefinitely, pending further evaluation.’

Speaking publicly about his suspension for the first time on his SiriusXM radio show, ‘Let’s Get After It, on Wednesday, Cuomo said that he understands why people believe he violated journalism ethics.

‘Quick note about the obvious,’ Cuomo told his listeners at the top of the program. ‘I’ve been suspended from CNN.’

After asking his producer to ‘cut the music,’ the broadcaster launched into a monologue addressing his professional woes.

‘You know this already. It hurts to even say it, it’s embarrassing, but I understand it and I understand why some people feel the way they do about what I did,’ he said at the top of the program.

‘I’ve apologized in the past and I mean it, it’s the last thing I ever wanted to do was compromise any of my colleagues and do anything but help.

Andrew Cuomo, the 63-year-old governor of New York, was accused of sexual harassment by 12 women, and Chris helped him with media handling. In May Chris admitted that he had been helping, but told viewers and Zucker that it was merely as a brotherly sounding board.

Andrew was forced to resign in August, and Chris was suspended on Tuesday – the day after the attorney general published the trove of documents.
