Pokemon Legends Arceus was released in 2022, and it quickly became one of the most well-loved games by the fans. This new game took fans away from the main series to a past version of the Sinnoh region when the relationship between humans and Pokemon was not as strong as players were used to. As a result, this spin-off game featured new ways to catch Pokemon, battle them, and new methods of exploring the open world. Since then, no word has come from Nintendo about whether another Pokemon Legends game was in the pipeline.

If there is to be another spinoff like Pokemon Legends: Arceus, then they may want to borrow some features from Scarlet & Violet.

Fortunately, Pokemon fans got to rejoice when the company announced that a new game, Pokemon Legends Z-A, would be coming in 2025 during their Pokemon Day celebration. The trailer didn’t show much, and Kalos seemed like an odd choice for the region in this new game. However, there are plenty of reasons why Kalos works as the next region to explore in Pokemon Legends A-Z.

It may not seem like it, but it has been over ten years since the release of Pokemon X and Y. This timing seems strange, given how the sixth generation of the series was the first to make the jump to 3D, but it is true. Therefore, there are several generations of Pokemon fans who are ready to dive back into Kalos once more.

Some of these fans may have experienced Pokemon X and Y as their first game in the franchise, while other long-time fans may have bought the game simply to see what the Pokemon world looks like in three dimensions. Either way, the time jump between seeing this region means that there are plenty of fans eagerly waiting to see it again.

Pokemon Z

The Missing Third Game

The Pokemon franchise is one that rarely deviates from its winning formula. As such, every new generation of Pokemon games starts with two main releases and then goes on to receive a third entry with updated features, a direct sequel, or DLC. However, as it currently stands, Pokemon X and Y are the only pair of games in the franchise that have never received any additional content after their main release. Many fans expected to get a third game, called Pokemon Z, at some point, but this game never materialized before the release of the seventh-generation games.

While many fans expected Johto or Unova to be the setting for the next Legends game, they have been visited twice before. Therefore, a return to Kalos makes the most sense with that generation’s history.

In each game, either Xerneas or Yveltal need to be caught to stop the evil Team Flare from using their energy to fire the Ultimate Weapon to reset the world. However, a third legendary Pokemon, Zygarde, is introduced in the post-game to round out these three native Kalos legendaries.

Sadly, no such game arrived, and Zygarde was reduced to a side quest collectible in Pokemon Sun and Moon. With Pokemon Legends Z-A taking place in Kalos, the developers finally have the chance to tell this mysterious legendary Pokemon’s story.

Lumiose City stands as the capital of the Kalos region and is a location fans can explore in Pokemon X and Y. As the capital, this location is a bustling hub of activity with a gym, plenty of shops, and NPCs to speak with.

Lumiose City and its central tower are instantly recognizable to any fan of the franchise and are large enough to feature as the main open-world location for a spin-off game. The rest of Kalos is not shown in the trailer, but that does not mean that other parts of the region will not be seen in Pokemon Legends Z-A. Plus, the urban development sign shown in the trailer may hint that players will see how this city came into existence.

Pokemon Legends Arceus is set in a very primitive age in the Sinnoh region from generation four, where Pokeballs have been freshly introduced, and the land is known as Hisui. As a result, many Pokemon fans have assumed that all subsequent games in the Legends series will explore a past version of iconic regions.

This exploration is a huge plus for fans of the Kalos region, as this place is steeped in history. The story in Pokemon X and Y explains the Pokemon War that occurred one thousand years before the events of those games, and how the character, AZ, used the Ultimate Weapon to wipe the slate clean in an era of rebirth for the Pokemon world. Clearly, there is a lot of great material that players would want to experience in a new game, and it is only available in the Kalos region.

Bringing Back An Iconic Mechanic

The Pokemon franchise has experimented with a lot of great battle mechanics in its history. Players have had to use Dynamax Forms, Z moves, and Tera forms in the past. The fan-favorite of these mechanics has always been the concept of Mega Evolution, which was introduced in generation six. This battle upgrade allows the player to temporarily evolve certain Pokemon to boost their stats in combat, but the feature remains exclusive to the generation six games.

This means that the old forms of these powered-up partners will be able to be used again, and some other Pokemon may finally receive a new Mega Evolution.
