Viewers of ITV's Maryland confessed they were stunned by the ending of showREAD MORE: Mother's double life is a brilliant twist on the secrets and lies thriller
ITVX’s new drama Maryland came to an end last night – with many viewers confessing they were left baffled by the final scenes in the show.
The programme stars Suranne Jones and Eve Best as Becca and Rosaline, two polar opposite sisters who are reunited when their mother is found dead on a beach on the Isle of Man.
As they are forced to spent time with each other and work out their feelings of grief, the two estranged sisters reconnect as they untangle their mother’s web of secrets and uncover her double life.
During the final episode, Becca and Rosaline reunited with a promise of meeting up again at their mother’s funeral.
But many viewers were stunned by the ending to the show, with one commenting: ‘So many unanswered questions and loose ends – why and how in particular Maryland. Feeling dissatisfied.’

Another wrote: ‘Was that it?’
A third added: ‘Maryland – no big twist then?’
A fourth wrote: ‘Has this really been dragged out over 3 episodes for THAT ending?’
‘Is there a reel of film missing?’ another commented.
Meanwhile another wrote: ‘I enjoyed Maryland but I would have liked to have seen their dad come to terms with everything in the end.’
‘ITV’s Maryland – is it me? But what a waste of time!’ one added. ‘So much TV of late ends with “Why did they bother?” So far-fetched and crammed with emotional cliches – and why oh why? Stockard Channing.’
During the last episode, Becca and Rosaline came to terms with the fact their mother had killed herself after she had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
Meanwhile their father Richard found out about his late wife Mary’s double life.

Many viewers were stunned by the ending to the show, with some questioning if there was a ‘reel of film missing’
He even took a trip to see his wife’s lover – whom he stared cold in the eye before leaving.
In the final scenes, Rosaline told Becca she would be staying on the Isle of Man, before telling her she would ‘sort the funeral.’
The two sisters could be seen exchanging an awkward goodbye before they told one another they loved each other, and embraced.
While many were unimpressed by the final episode, others had found the first programme emotional.
Some said they were left in tears by the emotional start to the episode, where the two sisters visited their grief-stricken father.

The show, co-created by Suranne Jones herself and directed by Sue Tully, had been much anticipated.
Speaking to the Daily Mail’s weekend magazine, Suranne, who is more used to strong women roles in dramas such as Dr Foster and Vigil, said: ‘I could have played either of the sisters but I went for the younger one because she’s dragged along by events rather than being all clued up and running the show in the way that some of my recent TV characters have been.
‘Amy Silva in Vigil and Anne Lister in Gentleman Jack were confident and on the front foot, whereas Becca is wound up and stressed in episode one – but slowly unwinds in episodes two and three,’ she added.
While most of Maryland is set in the Isle of Man, the drama wasn’t actually filmed there. Instead it was captured in locations around Ireland.
The house that the siblings discover their mother Mary living in can be found on the Howth Peninsula, east of Dublin, according to Radio Times.
